Lovely news and lovely to see everyone here after a long absence. I'm afraid this is a flying visit as I live a pc-free life these days.

Re: Favourite poems

One I like from Jorge Luis Borges History Of The Night Throughout the course of the generations men constructed the night. At first she was blindness; thorns raking bare feet, fear of wolves. We shall never know who forged the word for the interval of shadow dividing the two twilights; we shall neve...

That won't be necessary, thank you, Maria. This is for you, Alan.

Re: The age of consent?

The novel and film you're thinking of is 'Notes on a Scandal', Doug, and I agree with your sentiments. As Occam says, it comes down to a question of power. The proposal is to 'decriminalise' underage sex, which sounds fair enough to me. The idea that sex between consenting teenagers should be a crim...

Re: Is Richard Dawkins really God?

I don't worship Dawkins - I do think he's brilliant though in the past I've been quite annoyed with some of the things he's said - but I don't find it embarrassing that some people do seem to. They're just human.

Re: Spiritual Humanism - religion based on reason?

Many tend to think of humanism as synonymous with atheism. I see my atheism as a disbelief in a god or similar force, but my humanism as a philosophical outlook and code of behavior. As I understand it, Spiritual Humanists want to adopt the humanistic principles but still believe in a god or centra...

Re: HSS Education Strategy Launch

I would presume, though, that the sciency stuff shows the alternative, naturalistic viewpoint to the big questions often supposed to be answered by religion (why are we here? Who made us? etc). This would be appropriate if it's to be an alternative viewpoint taught side-by side with religious teach...

Wow, Paul, loving your avatar! *snigger* Thanks Maria. Funny thing is, I don't remember creating it ;-) I must be doing things in my sleep without realising it. Will have to give up these late nights! Paul Huh! Another victim of Maria's current favourite wheeze. Anyone else been SPAVED? (SPAV=South...

Maria, your forum includes a contributor crying about the fact the HSS logo is on each page of the Education material.
