Re: Pedants' corner

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21549731 Now this is surreal! Bob Godfrey, animator and creator of the cartoons "Roobarb and Custard", "Henry's Cat" (who the hell was Henry anyway?), and "Noah and Nelly in the Skylark" died yesterday, 2 (or so) days after Richard Briers, the voice of "N...

Re: Pedants' corner

I don't like referendums: it should be referenda, but language evolves, I suppose, like everything else. One erroneous phrase which I continue to use is this: Strictly, apparantly, it should be :"I wanted to book a table, but none was available." It make sense if you think that "none" is a contract...

Re: Pedants' corner

While I'm on my ranting vehicle, I wish to express my frustration at the misuse of the word "surreal" which according to my dictionary refers to "having the qualities of surrealism/bizarre" and "the irrational juxtaposition (of images)". I have heard 2 occasions on which this word was misused: 1) W...

Re: Grammer and phrases wot is irritating

This has been annoying me for years and I often think that I'm the only one, but does anyone else get irritated by the use of "there's" instead of "there are"? It seems to be very common these days and seemingly has become so acceptable that when I recently watched a news report on ITV a respected n...

Re: Interview the person below you.

Teaching in a bricks and mortar university rather than a distance learning one, or in a well paying job so that I can support my teenage daughter to a standard that she well and truly deserves.

What is your favourite classic novel (I leave you to interpret the term 'classic' as you wish)?

Re: Why did you choose your particular user name?

I thought I'd already added to this thread, but maybe I'm confused, I haven't been on this forum for a while. My username, imaginaryfriend was inspired by this interview with Jimmy Carr on the Late Late Show in Ireland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEu07RzZgbU As a reinforcement of his atheistic b...

An appeal to any literary types

I hope that my fellow forum members will humour me in my request for help. I'm currently studying for a Masters degree in English literature and must decide my dissertation topic. I have a few ideas, only 2 of them really solid. My favourite topic is surrogate fathers in 19th Century literature for ...

Big bang theory (on TV that is)

I love this show, I don't know if anyone else watches this on E4, but I and my youngest daughter (aged 13) love it. The theme tune (by Barenaked Ladies) is one of the highlights of the show:
