If we didn't have Churches, what would we have?

A lot of our 'landmarks' in Britain and indeed the rest of the world, are churches or cathedrals. While I don't agree with the nonsense that takes place inside them, I do still admire the architecture of these buildings. It struck me the other day that if we had never become a *christian* country th...

As Humanists, do you celebrate the festive season?

I have noted the steady flow of all things 'Christmassey" into the shops recently and it got me thinking... For many years 'Christmas' has for me, been about time off work & spending time with family, eating & drinking too much, relaxing and being able to spoil people and indulge the raging consumer...

Thanks Maria! It really is beyond belief! Considering some of these women leave abusive partners in nothing but the clothes they are standing in (I've heard of refuge staff having to beg bottles & formula from maternity wards etc as women have had to leave so suddenly etc) they can be cooped up in t...

Please help women in domestic refuges

Women who have fled to refuges due to domestic abuse are responsible for purchasing a TV licence immediately upon arrival if they have a television in their room? Hotels and guesthouses benefit from TV licence concessions but refuges don't. Get your MP to sign up to the early day motion which asks f...

Perhaps I should add that my friend is white, and obviously comes from quite a privileged white family in south africa. So I can't comment for anyone else in south africa, I just thought though that with the country the way it is, they'd have more important things to worry about than having a certif...

Religion in South Africa

I have become friends with a woman who was born in South Africa & grew up in Mozambique. Her & her Husband have a 4 month old son & they are getting to the point of wanting to have him christened. She was asking me about Humanist Naming Ceremonies, as they feel they might want to go down the 'middle...

Question about Humanist Wedding Ceremonies....

A friends has asked me if there are the same time constraints on a Humanist Wedding as there are a Civil or Religious Wedding, in that you must be married by 6pm for it to be legal? I have no idea & didn't want to tell *her* that as she thinks I know everything about all things Humanist... :laughter...

I would not object to ID cards if they were simply a convenient alternative form of ID for people who don't have a passport or drivers licence. I would certainly object to their being compulsory, both on the grounds of intrusiveness and sheer waste of money. I completely agree. If they were going t...

There is something called the “negative retinal afterimage”. It becomes visible when one given hue stays on the same retinal position for several seconds (usually we would move our eyes typically 3 times per second, so this is no disadvantage in normal viewing). The afterimage builds up as that reti...
