Re: The wearing of full face veils

I sometimes wonder if it's a bit like Scots who emigrate then suddenly find the need to learn to play bagpipes, wear a kilt and speak Gaelic! .[/quote] Quite likely in a few cases, but very few I think; we did not see many whole-body coverings in North Africa years ago, as I have seen in France mor...

Re: The wearing of full face veils

As it happens, this subject was discussed on French radio this morning. One person pointed out that hiding one's face was a block to communication, a way of cutting oneself off from society, and an imbalance (one person giving heself the right to see others, but refusing others that same right). Suc...

Re: Dawkins on the God of the Old Testament

And may I add, the American religious right-wing did little to stop the torture when Mr Bush's prayers were answered with an ever more difficult situation to deal with.

Re: Dawkins on the God of the Old Testament

I don't hate it, just think that most of it is quite irrelevant for today As for "ritual child sacrifice and temple prostitution" , I don't think it was necessarily the spiritual leaders that opposed these. Surely it was a more a matter of politics than of beliefs. Similarly today, it is secular mov...

The sea?

It's full of salt and covered in waves.

Re: Weather - or not!

Of course there is a god -- and a devil too. What else could cause us to bake in the sun and freeze in the shade two minutes later just round the corner? Treacherous weather in southern Spain; it reached 21° yesterday according to the thermometer in the shade, but it felt like 30° in the sun. The t...

My avatar has appeared, after all, but not venting anything, just sitting on a canon, ready to shoot any Jehovah Witnesses, admiring the view.

Re: Explain your avatar

Un-original, but honest : it's just me, venting my anger.

(except that I don't appear to have an avatar!)

Re: Should assisted suicide be legalised in Scotland?

I am all for legalization as a means of protection for members of the medical profession, who, at present are open to attack if there is any suspicion that a death has been assisted.

The responsibility must be very hard ot bear.

Re: Are you a humanist or what?

Years of doing what evryone else does, dressing alike, acting alike, "thinking" alike (in fact not thinking at all, just following the generally accepted mindset) makes it difficult to conceive original personal thoughts or form ones own opinions. We are all too easily influenced, and it takes a con...

Re: Are you a humanist or what?

This may not be the best place to admit it, but I feel that "humanism" sounds like a religion whose members put their faith in humankind rather than in some extra-terrestrial entity. My (perhaps limited) knowledge of history prevents me from putting any faith in my fellow humans, alas! Even going ou...

Re: Gerald Warner: The "Gay Threat" to Christianity

And I used to think -- and respect -- the Telegraph as a serious newspaper. Have not read it in years now, but am quite horrified that such an evil article can be published there. Indeed, horriofied that such trip can b find a publisher anywhere. I don't know where the rebuttal was published, but I ...

Re: How do you feel about religion?

Although tempted to vote #1 (they should not be tolerated), I did not do so, since religion can be a comfort for people in difficult circumstances. My own mother, widowed for 20 years, living alone, found comfort in the weekly church service. A young man I know, taken prisoner in a civil war, found ...
