Re: ATHEIST PRESIDENT IN SPAIN!!!
As Spain's new prime minister, whose party only has a quarter of the seats in parliament, he now has to decide who to include in his cabinet and is expected to name them next week, (reports the BBC)... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44340879 Mr Sánchez, who is an atheist, took the oath to p...

Nick: "..it seems [Trump] has had rather more success than anyone expected." What "success" has he "had"? .... But for whatever reason, it seems things are different in North Korea. Of course, there may be other reasons for it (I can think of several), but why has it happened now? Trump is too big ...

Re: In or out?
Sorry I don't have time to keep abreast of (much less contribute much to) this discussion. I'm still in favour of Remain too, by the way. It will be interesting to see how the EU and UK respond to the possible imposition of sanctions on UK companies if John Bolton and Trump seriously threaten them i...

Re: Unless Humanist uk values meets human needs, nobody give a shit
I've glanced over Coffee's lists and I suppose "What a load of rubbish" is as thoughtful and reasonable a response to those as "People don't want bad doctrine and they also don't want no doctrine either, what the public want is a good doctrine and humanist uk can't provide that" is to Humanists UK. ...

Re: Petition to abolish apostasy laws
I notice there's a number of these petitions.. https://www.change.org/p/abolish-blasphemy-laws As usual, humanist, atheist, secular, Skeptic-in-the-Pub, Brights and other groups of freethinkers aren't coordinating our efforts. The Christians have their own petition too, apparently. It would help if ...

Re: In or out?
It seems to me that the UK has handed 'control of our democracy' to places like India, China and Pakistan, never mind Australia. UKGov is in a much weaker bargaining position than the EU. I notice PM May didn't dare to challenge China's human rights issues on her visit and that seems the future. We ...

Re: Petition to abolish apostasy laws
I signed the petition under my real name. As for religions fighting each other, tribalism is required for human conflict. Nationalism, Ideology &/or religion provide the basis. Religion is superstition and the easiest to undermine. Muslims may be most influenced by fellow Muslims, as with any tribe,...

Re: Alex Salmond and atheists
I think the distinction should be made between faith based on reason and evidence, such as a bridge will support its traffic and religious faith. I think it is simply wrong to have religious faith. That is essentially either following instincts or outright superstition. Beliefs should only be held t...

Re: Archbishop of Canterbury abuses his privileged position
It is this muddling of religion, human values and morality that is most divisive and damaging. Children should be educated together. There are lots of reasons to segregate children according to ability, learning difficulties, physical and mental disabilities, behaviours and other factors. Segregatin...

Re: In or out?
From the Sunday Times You think Mr Varoufakis has any answers? I believe you also think the drop in £Sterling due to Brexit isn't large and damaging. I have plenty of disagreements with Varoufakis, but I think his analysis of the attitude of the EU is spot on. How about you? As for the drop in ster...

Re: In or out?
I don't want to insert any confusion or doubt into the Brexit process :-) but can Article 50's activation be reversed? There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer and the decision looks more likely to lie with the EU than with the UK. According to this, the short answer is "probably", quote... http...

Re: In or out?
It should be obvious to everybody by now that the United Kingdom can leave the European Union only with a deal worse than the one it currently has as a member of the European Union. That seems to be grounds enough for Parliament to do what it was elected to do, namely to govern for the common good ...
