Re: Despicable

I took "surely if this was the case, there would be newspaper articles and youtube video's to back it up" To mean "surely if this were true, there would be newspaper articles and youtube videos to support it". Appeared to me like you were saying it probably wasn't true as there is nothing about it i...

Re: Despicable

We tend to look on anecdotal "evidence" with a skeptical eye here, citations please. surely if this was the case, there would be newspaper articles and youtube video's to back it up, I see none :puzzled: .... Why do you say this about somebody you don't even know (Lifelinking)? Like I said, I don't...

Re: The Life You Can Save

So utilitarianism does hold that we have fundamental - inviolable - human rights? Not natural rights of course, rather 'man-made' but inviolable nonetheless? No, I don't think clayto meant to imply that (although feel free to correct me if you did). Utilitarianism doesn't allow for inviolable right...

Re: Despicable

No reference. I'm in contact with an awful lot of soldiers and UN/NGO workers. I was told this by an officer in in the Norweigan forces who was sent to Afghanistan and witnessed it herself. Of course she could have made it up, but going by other stories I have been told from the others also posted o...

Re: Room 101

Reminded by a comment I saw on another thread - I would put in pescatarians who refer to themselves as vegetarian -especially those who then think they have the right to look down their noses at you while you're quietly tucking into a ham sandwich. .... I think I need to stop nominating people to go...

Re: The Life You Can Save

Have you come across any Utilitarian writer / thinker / philosopher of any significance who has presented a case for death / penalty or torture based on Utilitarianism? No I haven't. Im not very well read in utilitarianism at all. I have only read JS Mill (although not remotely comprehensively), Si...

Re: Despicable

Our forces are no better. ISAF forces in Afghanistan have been criticised for allowing certain messages to be painted on the bellies of bombers and helicopters.

Doesn't do too much for their hearts and minds campaign either!

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

Am I right in thinking that far more people claim to believe in ghosts than God in the UK? If the god-believers are trinitarians, then belief in ghosts is part of the deal! Its strange that the Catholic church seems to have no unified stance on that! Actually, I guess maybe it isn't strange given t...

Re: Cooking crabs

I don't think its common for shellfish to be put in a freezer, certainly not in a restaurant. I worked for one seafood restaurant in particular which made us ramble on to our customers about how ethically sourced/farmed/caught our food was. Then in the fridge we had boxes of live crabs and lobsters ...

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

It's a problem with phone cameras: they emit high EMF fields and everyone knows they interfere with the natural EMF radiated by ghosts... haha love it! I find ghost pictures interesting - if only for working out how they were done. I used to believe in ghosts and thought that Most Haunted was 100% ...

Re: Do you/could you have a religious partner?

You may think I was looking too far ahead, but that's important to me, it needs to be going somewhere. I think when there are strong personal differences you need to think that far ahead, better to leave it early than to avoid thinking about it and end up hurt. I left a boyfriend after a year when ...

Re: The Life You Can Save

Whether utilitarianism (or Utilitarianism, I do make a distinction) 'sits well with you' depends I suspect upon your perception of what it is. For example early Utilitarians (Bentham included) went off the rails in proposing that there were objective mathematical procedures for calculating 'happine...

Re: Room 101

My dog is sitting there quietly behaving himself and you are allowing (sometimes encouraging!) your dog to distract and annoy my dog. On a similar note, I was at the beach a couple of weeks ago. Very dog friendly at that time of year. I watched one dog chase another dog around, and MOUNT that dog w...

Re: Complementary therapies

I have tried herbal remedies. They (St John's Wart) didn't work. However, I personally feel that the 'proper' drugs I were prescribed didn't help much either in that instance. I wouldn't be adverse to trying other complementary therapies. My Aunt is into this stuff, she swares blind that were it not...

Re: The Life You Can Save

I read Rethinking Life and Death so long ago I can't remember it in any real detail. Do I remember rightly that Singer is a utilitarian? I found most of the book incredibly interesting, but utilitarianism just doesn't sit well with me. How does utilitarianism fit in with humanism? (Coming from someo...
