BEST WISHES

A major illness (not anything I have eaten!) is the reason for my not being active at the present time. I hope others will keep the flag flying.

BEST WISHES TO ALL FOR CHRISTMAS (or whatever you prefer to call it) AND THE NEW YEAR.

What do humanists eat?

Marilyn Mason's article for the Shap Working Party on Education in Religion, 'What do humanists eat?', is now available at: http://www.shapworkingparty.org.uk/journals/articles_0910/mason.pdf. Marilyn, who worked as the Education Officer of the British Humanist Association from 1998 to 2006, is not ...

Quote: "In which case, why the thread title?" Presumably because the person who started it chose not to include 'animal' or more specifically 'cows' in the title, knowing that most people would understand. Simples.

Re: Oat-based milk replacement

Veggie bacon (usually Quorn, but not always) is one of our favourite foods. Where I live there were omnivores who went to a particular veggie cafe mainly for the veggie bacon butties, until the proprietor retired. Linda Mcartney veggie sausages are very good (just won an award) and 'sausage' is anot...

Re: Oat-based milk replacement

Milk is surely a generic term, coconut milk for example and many others. Meat substitutes (Quorn, Meatfree, Toffu, Yagga, etc) are an outstandingly good idea (and in many cases a commercial success), as are synthetic fur, numerous leather substitutes, and so on. They enable people who have developed...

Re: Leather Furniture

getreal --- yes indeed, 'there are animal products everwhere'. What you have done is demonstrate the point I make about the difficulties vegetarians face in 'a veggie unfriendly world' and why there is a need for them to 'complain. explain and campaign' --- hence part of the role of this and the man...

anaconda Quote: "I have chosen not to eat meat but that doesn't make me more or for that matter less of a humanist." I agree entirely, and have never said otherwise, although there are a couple of people who persist in misrepresenting this. HVG has never been about suggesting anyone is 'less of a hu...

Re: Ethical eggs and milk?

Nick ---- now that is a daft response if ever I saw one. Farm animals are 'exercising a choice' to be slaughtered are they? To make such a remark suggests total misunderstanding of Dignity, which is about humans exercising a free choice, when they have 'rational capacity' to do so, whereas farm anim...

Re: Leather Furniture

The 'yuck factor'. Unlike my objection to causing unnecessary suffering to animals 'yuck' is not a rational but an emotional (or instinctive?) response (there might be better words than this). Surely most people experience this in one form or another? If we confine ourselves to animal products, espe...

Re: Ethical eggs and milk?

First, I should point out that my first posting on this (and my other one on Leather) are questions . I am trying to establish what others think, partly as part of a personal effort (including some postings on a Vegetarian Society email discussion) to identify what really are the core differences be...

Re: Leather Furniture

But the question would be, what is "overplaying the vegan card"? Different people have different ideas of what "overplaying" is. Also, to be pedantic, ethical objections to leather are 'mainstream' for ethical veggies generally, not just vegans (as I have just confirmed in a phone call to the Vegear...

Re: Leather Furniture

Nick --- all of this has been gone over time and time again before. Utterly futile. I have said all I intend to say. I share with others the request that you move on to some other interest or obsession.

Re: Ethical eggs and milk?

Quote: "chickens and dairy cattle are killed once they stop being productive." I understand this to be not necessarily so, and have seen examples of where it is not the case, though presumably it is, in large scale commercial production. Then that would lead some people to say the fault lies in curr...

Re: Leather Furniture

I am not going to (yet again) get into the same endless argument with Nick which has gone on since before HVG was established, to no one's benefit as far as I can see. But there are two key points I will comment on as I see them as fundamental errors, or at least the reverse of my perception: Quote:...

Re: Leather Furniture

Quote "What possible good can it do to anybody or anything if you refuse to sit on your friend's leather couch?" It may or not do any good, which is why I ask for other people's views (especially fellow vegetarians, on a vegetarian forum). However, among the considerations I have are (a) principles ...

Hundovir --- you are right about the likely response from most vegans (though not all) but most vegetarians, including ethical vegetarians, are not vegans getreal --- I think 'hypocritical' is too self-critical, in all sorts of ways and for a variety of reasons most of us have problems with doing wh...

Quotes "Would you sit on a live cow?" Maybe, the issue is, is the cow being subjected to unnecessary suffering? If not I would have no ethical objection. A seat made from a dead cow has been produced as a result of the suffering inflicted on the cow by its slaughter. "if shaving was prohibited by th...
