The tension between The Muslims and The Hindus had been present right from the start of the Independance movement. There was a significant power struggle between MA Jinah and P Nehru the leaders of the two respective sides. This was mostly concealed by the focus on Gandhi. It has long been said that...

There are two aspects to this. The first is as Jatwhat say the right of the individual to dictate their own lifestyle, provided that their actions do not cause suffering to others. In that respect a persons right to individual actions should be respected. The second aspect is that we all live in a s...

The faith healer. I think I miss Alex even more than I miss John Lennon.

I'd find it very difficult to argue against any track from Disraeli Gears or most of the Stones catalogue ( my personal favourite is 'You Can't always get what you want ). Politically the most important was Hendrix's 'Star Spangled Banner' on the last morning of Woodstock. An often forgotten classic...

Alan, the trouble I see with denying 'no strings' aid to countries which do not recognise equality for women is that ultimately, you end up hurting the people you are trying to protect. If aid is withheld from countries that need it because of their treatment of women, you can bet that it will be w...

I can see how what I posted would imply that it's a womens movement problem. It's not of course but it does anger me that all the right on sisters of the eighties in their Greenham Common camps had so very much to say about a handful of missiles which were mostly theoretical but bugger all to say ab...

My method is simple ( and at times quite brutal ). Firstly draw up a list of all the things you want to do ( lists work ). The list can contain anything from ‘Buy new pair of socks’ to ‘End global poverty’. Then split the list into what is immediately achievable and what is not. Take the list that i...

This whole isuue is an explotation of the middle class white guilt that started to show it's head in the 60s. Now let's be honest the history of these islands has a great deal that should induce shame and a commitment to never again make such mistakes. The residue of all this soul searching is that ...

I really like Bryson. A walk in the woods convinced me that it would be utter insanity to ever leave the safety of the city.

Notes on a small island is probably the best British 70s memoire ever published.

The bottom line is that Bryson makes me laugh out loud while reading his books.
