Re: Petition to retain the ban on Capital Punishment in the UK

What is the point? Under EU rules no member is allowed the death penalty.

I cannot believe that such barbarism is even being debated. What is wrong with people?

Re: Grammer and phrases wot is irritating

I literally turned to stone, I felt like I could of died, but I decided to lay down until I felt good again. Later, Fred came and sat with my friend's and I, and soon he had took us home. Hopefully I'll get better at grammer soon......

Re: Do Human Rights transcend Cultural Relativism?

Then the only solution is a world without borders - people who have been denied the human rights they want in one country, could then move to a more advanced, egalitarian country. Ha ha - dream oh, eh? Some do make it out of repression into freedom of course - others simply don't know there is a bet...

Re: "Outrage as vicar urges women to submit to husbands"

I just can't understand why they keep saying the bible is 'God's word' when there are so many contradictory statements in it. People who advocate daft stuff like that, should explain why they want to take such passages about wifely submission as literal, but ignore passages about stoning adulterers ...

Re: Do Human Rights transcend Cultural Relativism?

In short - Yes!!! During a meeting many years ago of a local anti-racist group, I mentioned that as both a feminist and an anti-racist I found some conflict in the fact some cultures treat women appallingly. How could I accept such a culture without complaint? Would my objections be racist? In the e...

Re: Something Wonderful Happened Today....

My husband is having a terrible time with virus protection problems on his PC. He keeps muttering about trojans and whatnot. He has had terrible problems with Vista and can't decide whether to stay with it now that it is mostly sorted, or move to Windows7. he is forever cleaning the thing out, and r...

Re: Monarchy and attitude towards monarchy

I'm indifferent to the monarchy per se, but they are the tip of the class system in Britain, and that is what I loathe - the way your accent and where you live can define you more than your achievements and ability. All this Lord and Lady stuff is nauseating when they have done nothing to earn it ex...

Re: Being Human

The werewplf character is good - I remember that actor in' The History Boys', an Alan Bennett play made into a film. Now here's something very weird: in The History Boys there was a character with the exact same first name and surname as my oldest son. Both studied history at university, both were l...

Re: Being Human

I watch it online, and I love it - but only because I'm very fond of non-mainstream weird, I think. Looking back, most of my favourite entertainment is a bit eccentric, or science fiction. In spite of liking Being Human, I don't generally like the growing vampire genre.

Re: The wearing of full face veils

I accept all the complications about legislation, and the different principles involved - but my problems with full-face veils (niqabs and burkas) is that wearing the things is just plain stupid on many levels. The women who wear them in western societies know that this is how they are seen - well t...

Re: General election

The age is 18. Preferential voting means you vote 1 for your favourite, 2 for the next preference. 3 for the next etc. If the candidate with the most votes gets less than 50%, 2nd preferences are counted. Any candidate who gets over 50% wins, and preferences are ignored. Being forced to vote works b...

Re: General election

I believe that transfering faith based schools to the State system has been done in the past. I went to St Pauls junior school in Mirfield in the 1950s, and it was part of the normal system, in spite of its name. I read Michael Cain's autobiography, and when he passed his 11+ he was sent to the near...

Re: "Pact With the devil caused Haiti earthquake"

One of the right-wing religious nutters was always going to say something like that after the Haitian quake. It was just a question of which one. I had imagined it would be someone a little less high profile.... Once, at work, we accidently got on the mailing list of a new right wing, praise-the-Lor...

Re: The wearing of full face veils

I agree with banning full face coverings on security grounds. After all, the cops would soon be on to someone going around in a stocking mask or even a ski mask. You have to wonder why they are hiding their faces, while able to see all the faces around them. It is a bad imbalance. Of course, I find ...

Re: Do you believe in god?

No 'God' seems to be an invisible friend to many people - a product of their imagination, put there by religious teachings and texts. Because the establishment in many countries encourages belief in this invisible friend, and because fellow believers share the same invisible friend, 'God' maintains ...

Re: That's what I call punishment

I bet they put him there on purpose! Remember Hannibal the Cannibal in 'Silence of the Lambs'? The sadistic prison governer piped fundamentalist bible-ranting TV into his cell to torture him.

Or maybe in this case the prison boss wanted to torture the bible-basher....

Re: Assertiveness Training

Yes - debating the god-botherers who are bothering you can be fun. I have an advantage: I'm not very assertive myself - more of a peacemaker usually, but I'm a Yorkshirewoman living a long way from Yorkshire, and I still have a strong accent: for some reason the accent makes people think I'm tough. ...

Re: Assertiveness Training

I'm not the most assertive of individuals myself, though probably in the past four years I've at least improved somewhat. Still, I can't afford to be too assertive because I could lose my job (EVERYone in my department, including my boss and even the CEO are fundamentalist Christians). But when app...

Re: Judge John Deed

I like most things Martin Shaw is in. When he was young he did a cop show - 'The Professionals' I think it was. Anyway, I did like that short series George Gently - one part of each episode that really freaked me out was when they showed the convicted murderers being hanged (it was set in the period...
