Re: Do/can we have free will and moral responsibility?

The mechanisms of causality doesn't permit any extra-causal freedom. :D Yes, quite. But animist is not claiming that there is such a thing as extra-causal freedom. What he's saying, I believe, is that there is another kind of freedom that means that we have moral responsibility for our actions. Or ...

Re: Do/can we have free will and moral responsibility?

[W]hat you [Compassionist] say seems to be that punishment is OK and necessary but blame and reproach are not. That does seem pretty close to Emma's views ... It doesn't seem close to my views to me. :D Of course, it all depends on what you mean by punishment and blame and reproach. But, to repeat ...

Re: The Falklands

Hmm. I think there's a book I need to read, and I don't have to pay £115 for it on Amazon ; I can read it on Google books: The Falklands/Malvinas Case: Breaking the Deadlock in the Anglo-Argentine Sovereignty Dispute (Developments in International Law) , by Roberto C. Laver, The Hague: Martinus Nijh...

Re: The Falklands

I can't believe you just said "the Argies"! I knew this would attract attention. Well, I and lots of people these days say "Brits" and I like genuinely punchy abbreviations for longish words; I know that "Argies" sounds like "Gerries" in WW2 (and I remember jokingly saying this to a colleague in 19...

Re: The Falklands

Missed a bit: That is in fact not quite saying that I think that if there were another invasion, we should do, assuming that we could, what we did in 1982; I don't know what that scenario might be like but I assume that the initial invasion, to be successful, would be a lot bloodier than the 1982 on...

What I was querying was the view of some of you that the islanders' reasonable desire to be allowed to remain under jurisdiction of the UK, or to adopt some other jurisdiction, is not worth spending money on I think it is worth spending money on, within limits, but I don't think it's worth risking ...

Re: The Falklands

I had missed Emma's figure of £400 million but the figure of £69 million I found agrees closely with the one in the article Animist found. The £61 million figure quoted in Business Insider for 2011[--][/--]12 matches the figure quoted in Andy McSmith's Diary in the Independent yesterday. But this i...

Re: Henny Penny

It's the old problem of using Hennikenny for a four-syllable word, but complicated further by the additional Henny. It makes it sound as though the first two syllables of the first word rhyme with the second two syllables and are the same as the second word (see my earlier comments on p. 30). That's...
