Re: Bread

Some tips, as a fellow bread machinist: There's yeast and there's 'rapid rise' yeast. The rapid rise can be simply dumped into your flour mix but you'll get more bang from the regular yeast if you add the sweetener and yeast to the (warmed) water and give it a while to wake up and get fizzing (foami...

Re: Do you ever go to church?

I wouldn't be averse to attending the local Unitarian-Universalist church. They're very big on social, enviromental and political issues.
The congregation was polled once and slightly over 50% of the congregation identified as athiest.

Re: Haiti earthquake is a sign of 2012 destruction?

But decibels measure actual sound pressure, not perceived sound, which scales up much more slowly.
It all gets very confusing.

Re: Monarchy and attitude towards monarchy

Isn't that why you guys get in such a tizz about the right to bear arms - in case Lizzy or one of her descendents try to reclaim the colonies? :D Not at all... it's because we have unusually small penises. Anyway. Swopsies - you can have her and we will take Obama..... No, we need him to quietly st...

Re: Monarchy and attitude towards monarchy

If you British chaps do get tired of a monarch why not send her over here? The US could do with a symbolic head of state; a charismatic "leader." We desperately need a symbolic personification of the Nation to complain to and about, to unify the people and to run around the country opening animal sh...

Exactly their point, Nick. They do consider themselves fully functioning, integrated members of the community and object it any implication that they're 'second class citizens'.

Another glorious, sunny, icy cold day day here. Yikes! It just started hailing here. Ground's turned white, much clattering on roof.

Re: General Ignorance

It would take a lot more fuel to achieve orbit if you ascended slowly, and the extra weight would require still more fuel. I think the most efficient cost/fuel/weight formula is to achieve escape velocity as quickly as possible.

Of course, I'm no rocket scientist.

Re: The Pedant

The disabled community, here in the US at least, object to the term "handicapped" because it implies beggary ('cap-in-hand'). The community doesn't want to be thought of as indigent.

Re: Dogs are cruel, Cats are cool

Trap him. Take him to the vet for a physical and spay/neuter. Fix whatever's found wrong, if possible. Let him go. If he's a stray you may be able to tame and re-home him, as maria suggests, but if he's truly feral this is unlikely and he'd do better in his old haunts, with a steady food and water s...

Re: Campaign to stop Council prayers

If the council balk at the actual elimination of the prayer, perhaps a stronger case could be mad that the prayer, which I assume is standard Anglican fare, was discriminatory and should reflect a greater variety of religious traditions. Perhaps after picturing prostrations toward Mecca, Hindu pujas...
