Re: Interesting stuff
Restoring the thread to it's original intentions... From an answer to my question on Ask a Biologist, I have learned that elephants do not have, as I thought, 4 knees, but 2 knees and 2 elbows. :D What interesting fact would you like to share with the world? I wonder if that goes for all quadrupeds...

Re: Arguments for the existence of God
Paolo, The same could be true of the Universe... You're ignoring the point that the origin of the Universe is not a valid argument for the existence of God, which is the point of this thread. Yes, the universe could 'just be'. But no, I am not ignoring the point of this thread, for the very reason ...

Re: Arguments for the existence of God
Paolo, Including God presumably. Quite so, no theistic conception of God is of a caused entity. If God were caused then to postulate God as a causal explanation of the universe would obviously be a non-starter. Mick I assume then that God just is, always has been and always will be? The same could ...

Re: Arguments for the existence of God
Nothing can cause itself, agreed. Including God presumably. Keeping to the topic of the thread, the origin of the Universe does not provide the basis for a valid argument for the existence of God, since God is merely one proposed originator or cause amongst many - and indeed there is no good reason...

Re: Arguments for the existence of God
Sorry, been away from this for a while. Which god did the creating and where did this god came from again? This seems to be just another example of a good old supernatural explanation being wheeled out when we don't know the answers to a complex question. It doesn't answer anything - just pushes the...

Re: Vitamin supplements and diet programmes
Vitamin supplements can be useful if there is a specific need for them due to health issues or a poorly balanced diet. Otherwise they serve no useful function and they can potentially cause harm from hypervitaminosis. They are also expensive and I have heard reports (can't find ref at the moment) th...

Re: Our countup thread
Thought I'd drop by to say 'Happy New Year!' - it's been a while, but I hope to be back a bit more frequently this year!

Re: Our very own countdown thread!
Looking after birds in a good thing to do, especially at this time of year. A question, though. I amsurrounded by migrating waders and such like, searching for worms and other goodies in the mud. Can a bird process salt-water? Or do they have to seek fresh water too? Funnily enough I posted a littl...

Re: Gravity
Since Gravity does not seem to explain close to 90% of the universe there is a new theory proposed which of course is called woo by the establishment (what more can you expect from them anyway). That theory is called the Electric Universe...or plasmic universe. As per the theory there are 4 states ...

Re: The Game of Life and God
I assume you are referring to the fact that the game of life has been formulated as a concept by a sapient being, which runs using algorithms applied by a sapient being and has been structured to run by a sapient being. If so, you (or rather the dude on telly) are missing the point that the game is ...

Re: The Illusion of Reality
Just consider the implication of this...if 99.99% of most solids is space (liquids and gases will have even higher perc) then why do objects seem apparently solid and real? Because the mind is causing that illusion...and based on that illusion we experience life in the myriad ways that we do...see ...

Re: Why Time may not be possible
There is no event, or "sequence" or set of events, that cannot be described in non-temporal terms. That is one reason for there not being Time. If that's the case, go ahead and describe how to soft boil an egg in a way that can be usefully applied by someone unfamiliar with boiling an egg, without ...

Re: Rational argument?
"Rational" argument? There are no "logical" arguments. Tautologies, contradictions and deductions show nothing or else show facts that are already in full view. There are no "scientific" arguments. Science deals in facts. Then let us be square, for argument's sake. Argument is about raising voices,...
