Re: On Intimations of the Ghost in the Machine.
I don't use smiley faces Emma, (much too stuffy for that), but there was an exclamation mark after "wood" which I hoped would suffice to convey that I was teasing. Sorry if it didn't. It was clear that you were being light-hearted, and my response was also intended to be light-hearted, hence my own...

Re: Cardinal Keith O'Brien strikes again
In some ways, it is strange, as marriage was not such a major part of the church, in England at least, until Tudor times. After all, weren't marriages conducted at the church gate, rather than inside? I must see if I can find some references.... Yes, I remember the Wife of Bath saying that she'd ha...

Re: The Falklands
I suppose that sovereignty is something which is difficult to compromise over, particularly as the islands are largely self-governing, so it would be a diminution in democracy for Argentina to have any real say in their affairs ... If all the Falklanders were to be asked to put up with was a few Ar...

Re: The Falklands
I must ask those who seem to be so sure that 3,000 people are not worth spending money on how they would feel if these islanders were the descendants of black slaves rather than of free whites. I think they most definitely are worth spending money on. Their lives are important. Their safety is impo...

Re: The Falklands
Ptecisely my point. If, and only if, international law says the residents of an area have the right to annexe themselves to some state, (for whatever reasons) then fine. If the people of both the disputed territory and their 'chosen state' are agreeable to the arrangement, then fine, no probs. But ...

Re: The Falklands
"The wishes of the islanders must be paramount'??? WTF does that mean? There are Jewish settlements in Patestine. In international law they are illegal. Should 'the wishes of the settlers be paramount'? Of course not. International law should be paramount. There should be a legal agreement between ...

Re: The Falklands
I think the British government should have negotiated a transfer of the Falkland Islands to Argentina a long, long time ago, with substantial financial compensation to any Falkland Islanders who wanted to emigrate. Funnily enough, I was in the Falkland Islands in 1966-7. My dad, a civil engineer, wa...

Re: On Intimations of the Ghost in the Machine.
Have you ever had a moment of Satori. I had to look this up. Not being a Zen Buddhist, it's not a concept that is particularly meaningful for me. However, at a more banal, commonplace level, I have certainly had moments of sudden understanding, sudden clarity. I might even have referred to such a m...

Re: Grammer and phrases wot is irritating
yes, I suppose that with these phrasal verbs, the so-called preposition is not really a preposition at all, and I suppose that it seems wrong to end sentences with prepositions because of the word itself: its very name demands that it should have some word after it. In some of your examples, like "...
