Re: Humanism and Superstition

"Attribution of physical causes to something that is not physical"?
I think of it more as not attributing causes at all, or attributing supernatural, magical causes -- effect without cause.

Re: Autumn Bounty

chilli is the more common English spelling although one finds chili and chile The plural is chillis or chillies They (and their common by-product cayenne pepper ) are often avoided by those with gastric senstivities. LOL, true, "chilli's" fine in Texas, Arizona or Colorado, but it'll never fly in N...

Re: Autumn Bounty

In New Mexico, this time of year, green chile (never 'chili') vendors appear everywhere. One buys a sack of chiles, the vendor roasts them in a big wire barrel over a gas fire, and puts them into a plastic trash bag to 'season' on the way home. Once home we slip off the husks and freeze the chiles i...

I have a cat that does the same patting on the face thing to me when I'm trying to sleep. Luckily no slaps yet.

Re: Miner miracle?

No miracle. Just ordinary mining technology. Aren't you going too far the other way, seyorni? That technology was the product of human ingenuity, its loan was driven by human charity and its use was governed by human skill and knowledge. Without people machinery is just so many strangely shaped lum...

Re: The wearing of full face veils

Whilst I can understand the French annoyance at the Muslim resistance to acculturation and the ethnic enclaves forming in many areas, I see the veil ban as largely a symbolic, reactionary move. It seems to me at odds with France's vaunted liberte' . Some thoughts: Might Muslim countries react by ban...

Re: Do you have bad taste?

Well, I clearly have no sense of style -- Jeans or fatigue trowsers and a work shirt works fine for me. Interior design? -- I'm a bachelor. I live in a den. I also confess to a secret love of pop music, even bubblegum pop.
I also like Lady Gaga.

Re: A challenge to environmental arguments against meat-eating

I've no problem with a most of Jesus' teachings (though I'm a bit mystified by his antipathy towards figs). Like Gandhi, I like Christian teachings but have problems with Christians.

Re: Do animals have rights?

I see a biological parallel between humans and other animals, but not a moral one, Manuel. Animals aren't moral agents. They're not able to appreciate the effects their actions will have on others, nor do they generally have the option to choose alternatives. We, on the other hand, are not creatures...

Re: A challenge to environmental arguments against meat-eating

Some good points on both sides. The large-scale factory farming and fishing needed to supply the world's ever-increasing demand for meat is environmentally and ecologically problematic. On the other hand, small scale husbandry and a low meat demand could be fairly benign -- but how are we to accompl...

Re: Harley etc.....

If I really wanted a motor cycle I would probably be best to buy what all Harley owners should really have, with good build quality, reliability and modern technology, the Honda Goldwing. But they too hanker for the days of their youth. LOL. That's not motorcycling! Might as well just pull the door...

Now just about anything Vincent built would beat a HD hands down, in my highly subjecive and biased opinion. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lCH5JgWCZY I'm not sure what you mean by "beat" but Harleys weren't designed as racing bikes. An old Vincent probably could beat a HD of the same year, but...
