Re: Something nasty happened today

Good grief that's a bit rough without sedation of any kind. I've had two scopes both with a decent belt of Valium beforehand. Glad there were no surprises.

Still the ' side effect ' of an impressive nurse appears to have been a distraction. I wonder if she does all the non sedation jobs?

Re: The future of the NHS (if any)

Slightly off the point but I recall a customer survey towards the end of theLabour administration showed high lebels of individual satisfaction with the quality and speed of care/treatment, but also concern regarding the general level of care within theNHS. The suggestion here was that unrepresentat...

Re: The future of the NHS (if any)

The NHS is under considerable threat. I've not read all this thread but Alan's links have provided further confirmation and bolster what hat many people have felt about this. The interests of an ageing nation cannot be met through market based competition and in particular privatisation. The emphasi...

Thundril, thanks indeed that's very helpful. I'm thinking too longitudinally!

Re: Atheists. Why. . .

... is there something rather than nothing? Why does there necessarily need to be an answer to that question? We would only be able to attempt to answer it in human terms anyway, which, given our consmic insignificance, would tend to suggest that we are quite likely to get it wrong anyway. While we...

Re: Atheists. Why. . .

I don't think you are understanding what I am arguing. First, to discuss the reality of God one must define God. The usual question is, Does God exists? However, this question implies that God is somehow distinct from existence. Pantheism identifies God with Existence, at least mine does. So the qu...

Re: Atheists. Why. . .

Is a definition of God as Being or Existence warranted? Indeed it is, on the basis of the incomprehensibility of the vastness and complexity of the cosmos. How many electrons are there in the known universe? What is the temperature of the heat of all of the known stars? It is scientific knowledge t...

I recall that JWs also predicted 1984 as the end of the world.

Is it too cruel to bring these matters up when they come 'a knocking'?

Re: we are a Christian country

What a self-serving load of Tory shite. Of course, for the sake of balance, we must include that "one-eyed Scottish idiot" son of the manse, and , likewise, the one and only, Mr. Tony "We don't do God, but I'm actually a spineless Catholic" Blair. Purely in the interests of political balance. At le...

Re: Christopher Hitchens

Very sad to hear of his death this morning. I got into him after reading God is Not Great and was quite taken by his expressive use of language and vigour. I also loved his debating style and humour. A genuine loss to those who bother to think about the issues that affect us all, and the importance ...

So the government and financial institutions are both to blame. We can debate over the percentage distribution of vicarious liability. Also responsible are private equity cock ups not solely dodgy mortgages. Here the financial institutions got gobsmackingly greedy. Yes greedy. They may have been ope...

Lounging around on a campsite in the dordogne next to the river, with a bottle of red. Perfect. Smells?...a bit obvious but walking downstairs in the morning and smelling a real christmas tree instantly brings back happy childhood memories..... not that we have a tree you understand, except at xmas....

I read an interview with Rowland and his mother. They were talking about how hard it had been when people around assumed that were part of the rock family and supposedly had all the wealth that came with it, when in reality they were as skint as anyone else on low income. They talked about how one o...

How depressing. Id rather economists modified their everyday trading and create a position where it's impossible for them to screw the countrys economy. Why should the risky actions of a few have the potential for such large scale negativity. It wasnt always thus. Robert Pestons analysis is utterly ...
