There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

This is fascinating: Trumps wall plans in size comparison

The US/Mexican border is the equivalent of the distance from the English Channel to the Black Sea.

And he's not even President yet: Donald Trump risks China rift with Taiwan call
Donald Trump risks opening up a major diplomatic dispute with China before he has even been inaugurated after speaking on the telephone on Friday with Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan.

The call, confirmed by four people, is believed to be the first between a US president or president-elect and a leader of Taiwan since diplomatic relations between the two were cut in 1979.

Although it is not clear if the Trump transition team intended the conversation to signal a broader change in US policy towards Taiwan, the call is likely to infuriate Beijing which regards the island as a renegade province.

The US has adopted the so-called “One China” policy since 1972 after the Nixon-Mao meetings and in 1978 President Jimmy Carter formally recognised Beijing as the sole government of China, with the US embassy closing in Taipei the year after.

The Trump team did not initially respond to multiple requests for comment but, after the Financial Times first published news of the call, confirmed that the president-elect had spoken with Ms Tsai and “noted the close economic, political, and security ties” between Taiwan and the United States.

“Regardless if it was deliberate or accidental, this phone call will fundamentally change China’s perceptions of Trump’s strategic intentions for the negative. With this kind of move, Trump is setting a foundation of enduring mistrust and strategic competition for US-China relations.”

This is not going well: China issues diplomatic protest against Donald Trump for phone call to Taiwan president
China lodged a diplomatic protest after Donald Trump spoke to President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan on the phone.

The move, which breaks away from four decades of US foreign policy, was the first telephone call between a US president-elect or president with Taiwan’s leadership since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979.

China's Foreign Ministry said it had lodged "stern representations" with what it called the "relevant US side", urging the careful handling of the Taiwan issue to avoid any unnecessary disturbances in the relationship of the two superpowers.

Just let this sink in for a minute...

Donald Trump to Remain Executive Producer on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’
Donald Trump will remain an exec producer on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” which is returning Jan. 2 after a two-year hiatus with new host Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Trump will be the Executive Producer of a TV reality show and will be paid by the huge multinational corporation, MGM, whilst also being the President of the United States of America.
The fact that a sitting president will be on the payroll of a current TV show is another example of the thicket of potential conflicts of interest raised by Trump’s segue from private businessman and TV star to commander-in-chief. However, past presidents have published books during their time in the White House, so there is precedent for a president earning royalties while in office. In the case of President Obama’s 2010 book “Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters,” his profits from the Alfred A. Knopf publication were donated to a charity supporting the children of disabled veterans.

An Open Letter to the Secretary of Education Designate from Thousands of American Clergy
Third, we note that you will be entering an administration that, in large part, has made it clear that it has little regard for scientific expertise. From evolution to climate change, the administration’s position is diametrically opposed to the worldwide scientific consensus. We urge you to be a voice of reason in the midst of this collective negativity. We fear for the future of our country, for the possibility of future innovation arising from our children’s generation, if they are taught to disregard all expertise. While we believe it is good and wise to teach children to ask questions, it is anti-intellectual to teach them to do so mindlessly. Children must learn the difference between facts and opinion, and they must learn to deal with even those facts which make them uncomfortable. As the Secretary of Education, you have the opportunity to educate the rest of the administration about the power of education. We hope you embrace this opportunity fully because it may, in fact, be the most critical aspect of your job.

Electoral college members demand information on Russian relations before voting to make Donald Trump president
Ten members of the electoral college have requested more information from intelligence officials on the relationship between President-elect Donald Trump and Russia.

The electoral college addressed an open letter to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper prior to their 19 December vote that would finalise the election results.

US intelligence officials concluded that Russia conducted hacks against the Democratic National Committee and other associated officials in order to help Mr Trump win the election. President Barack Obama had earlier called for a "full review" of intelligence surrounding Russia's involvement in the hacks.

Let's hope it is powerful, but peaceful. He's obviously just the character to incite strong feelings - on both sides.

But any ideas what's likely to happen with the electoral college votes?

America has one final chance to stop Donald Trump becoming president
Donald Trump will face his final hurdle before being inaugurated as President of the United States on Monday, when members of the Electoral College meet to cast their votes.

Mr Trump must gain 270 votes for the election result to be formally recognised, in what is normally considered a rubber-stamping process. However, the vote has on this occasion been marred for widespread calls for recounts in key states, calls for electors to disregard their states' voting rules and a bill aimed at threatening Mr Trump with future impeachment by introducing new conflict-of-interest rules.

My guess is that nothing is going to change and Trump will be elected. There have been death threats against some of the electors on both sides.

I hope I am wrong though.

The thinking here is that Pence will be the real power behind Trump. Pence is an ultra conservative and doesn't even believe in evolution.

I'm really disturbed by Trump's choice of cabinet members.

San Francisco’s Official Response to the Election of Trump
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently passed a resolution, introduced by Board President London Breed, in response to the election of Donald Trump. The resolution reads as follows:

WHEREAS, On November 8, 2016, Donald Trump was elected to become the 45th President of the United States; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That no matter the threats made by President-elect Trump, San Francisco will remain a Sanctuary City. We will not turn our back on the men and women from other countries who help make this city great, and who represent over one third of our population. This is the Golden Gate—we build bridges, not walls; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That we will never back down on women’s rights, whether in healthcare, the workplace, or any other area threatened by a man who treats women as obstacles to be demeaned or objects to be assaulted. And just as important, we will ensure our young girls grow up with role models who show them they can be or do anything; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That there will be no conversion therapy, no withdrawal of rights in San Francisco. We began hosting gay weddings twelve years ago, and we are not stopping now. And to all the LGBTQ people all over the country who feel scared, bullied, or alone: You matter. You are seen; you are loved; and San Francisco will never stop fighting for you; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That we still believe in this nation’s founding principle of religious freedom. We do not ban people for their faith. And the only lists we keep are on invitations to come pray together; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That Black Lives Matter in San Francisco, even if they may not in the White House. And guided by President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, we will continue reforming our police department and rebuilding trust between police and communities of color so all citizens feel safe in their neighborhoods; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That climate change is not a hoax, or a plot by the Chinese. In this city, surrounded by water on three sides, science matters. And we will continue our work on CleanPower, Zero Waste, and everything else we are doing to protect future generations; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That we have been providing universal health care in this city for nearly a decade, and if the new administration follows through on its callous promise to revoke health insurance from 20 million people, San Franciscans will be protected; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That we are the birthplace of the United Nations, a city made stronger by the thousands of international visitors we welcome every day. We will remain committed to internationalism and to our friends and allies around the world—whether the administration in Washington is or not; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That San Francisco will remain a Transit First city and will continue building Muni and BART systems we can all rely upon, whether this administration follows through on its platform to eliminate federal transit funding or not; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That California is the sixth largest economy in the world. The Bay Area is the innovation capital of the country. We will not be bullied by threats to revoke our federal funding, nor will we sacrifice our values or members of our community for your dollar; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That we condemn all hate crimes and hate speech perpetrated in this election’s wake. That although the United States will soon have a President who has demonstrated a lack of respect for the values we hold in the highest regard in San Francisco, it cannot change who we are, and it will never change our values. We argue, we campaign, we debate vigorously within San Francisco, but on these points we are 100 percent united. We will fight discrimination and recklessness in all its forms. We are one City. And we will move forward together.

What joke best illustrates the difference between Democrats and Republicans?
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him:

"Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be an Obama Democrat.

"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Republican."

"I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are -- or where you are going. You've risen to where you are , due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's my fault."

1. A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers.
2. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
3. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he asked for his health insurance, and the man had none, so the priest did move on.
4. A Levite came to the place and saw him, and tried to sell him health insurance, but the mans injuries were not covered for they were a pre-existing condition.
5. A Pharisee came to the place and found a policy but the man could not afford it for the premiums were too high.
6. A Samaritan, or as it may be a a Muslim, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.
7. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.
8. And Barack asked: “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
9. The next day he made a law to help the man.
10. And the Republicans did cry as one: "COMMUNIST!"
11. And Donald did say: Barack's law is an evil law, I shall repeal it
12. And I shall replace it with something that shall be great
13. And the people did ask: What is the thing that is great with which you will replace Barack's law?
14. And Donald did say: It will be great, the best
15. And the people did say: But what will it look like?
16. And Donald did wave his arms and shoot out his lips and did not say
17. And so it came to pass that Donald did replace Barack in the white palace
18. And the Trumpites did tear up the law of Barack
19. And the priests and the Levites and the Pharisees dd continue to walk past the sick and ther fallen
20. And the Trumpites did blame the Ombamites.
