I know Brexiters don't like to talk about it, bid you miss the bit about how we already have the power to control our own immigration, coffee?
Alan Henness

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Coffee, while you and other Brexiters worry about all those immigrants coming over here and contributing their hard-earned taxes to HMRC, what are your thoughts on the problems Brexit will bring? How will they be solved? Or, if you don't know, do you just have faith they will be resolved and everything will all be tickety-boo? Somehow or other. Honest, Nige said so... He promised...

Brexit nightmares: The red tape reality of rules-of-origin
For cross-border trade to function, goods must have an 'economic nationality'. This is the glue that makes tariffs stick. The UK urgently needs to build a rules-of-origin framework for the foundations of any future EU-UK trade deal.

It will be important to get the details right, but HMRC is already preoccupied with a new computer system to manage post-Brexit customs transactions. It can expect to be overwhelmed by a tidal wave of new work: infrastructure consultancy Oxera predicts that the volume of customs clearances to be processed will rise from 60 million a year to 300 million.

The five-fold increase in customs transactions is likely to be accompanied by a rise in the complexity of the calculations involved. And yes, there are rules-of-origin for every sector.

Rules-of-origin aren’t just an EU requirement. They’re the bedrock of trade deals put together by blocs like the EU, or major trading countries such as Canada. The UK will need to ensure that food products made with a mix of UK and EU ingredients have sufficient 'local content' to comply with these rules and qualify for any preferential tariffs.

UK food manufacturers are in for a shock. They have come to rely on easy access to a wide range of imported ingredients from all around the world. Some, like tomato paste, currently come from Europe with a zero tariff, while others are available from countries outside Europe which have preferential tariffs negotiated by the EU. The UK is desperate to remain a party to as many of these after Brexit as possible.

Before Easter, the UK’s international trade minister Liam Fox told the BBC that his department had already contacted some 70 countries about retaining access to these pre-existing EU trading agreements. He suggested that he had received up to 40 potentially positive responses, but his track record is unimpressive in either accuracy or effectiveness, so we’ll have to take this with a pinch of salt.

well, the fact that the Irish (not just UK remainers) are worried about this issue should dispel the ridiculous claim that the issue is being used as a dodge against Brexit. I would be more inclined to listened to the elected representatives of the Irish people than some doctrinaire apostle of Brexit who will not have to take responsibility for being wrong. Coffee, if you are indeed some sort of humanist then you need to realise that, even if you simply a poster on an online forum, you have some responsibility for any influence you might have. If you simply post stuff which supports some gut preference you have then you are not taking responsibility for your actions. I challenge you to justify posting the bland assurance of Hannan against the detailed arguments of Ian Dunt about the genuine problem of the border: http://www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2018/03 ... y-it-won-t

first piece of crap - OK, let them go back to their own countries. with some money which represents a bit of the costs of keeping them here (why am I so brilliant? Only joking). Second piece of crap - if he had said that London was doomed, would this have appeared in the Daily Fail? yep, probably Canada DOES think it might get a better trade deal, from its own viewpoint, with Britain compared to the one with the EU. Is this good news for Britain? Hardly, and this is what bothers me. While trade deals should be good for both parties, this presupposes some situation of normality and calm informed negotiation. But Britain after Brexit will not be a normal country, it will be one striving to show that the decision to leave was right and that the mere existence of deals with other countries proves this. The fact that these deals are likely to be more favourable to these other countries compared with Britain will be ignored. At any rate, this is more mindless opium for the masses

trade may or may not be beneficial to both sides: was the trade between Africa and Europe which involved slaves crossing the Atlantic beneficial to both sides? Anyway, your logic is askew. If Britain leaves the EU then the deal already done between the EU and Canada will lapse. Any new deal which Britain manages to strike with Canada will probably be better than the situation characterised by lack of deals in which Britain finds itself, but it is unlikely to be better than the deal already struck on Britain's behalf by the EU. Give me a good reason why some new deal between a newly isolated Britain and Canada will match the existing deal

One extrmely good reason why a newly liberated UK will be able to strike a better deal with Canada as an independent nation than as part of the EU is that we will no longer be constrained by the trade destroying, insular, protectionist restrictions so beloved of our continental neighbours.

back to the rhetoric. I gave you several reasons, genuine ones, why this is not likely; I could also have mentioned that Britain will be a novice in negotiating such deals. Even if the EU does have protectionist elements - which is true - how can trade deals with outsiders be construed as protectionist? Have you ordered your copy of Ian Dunt's book yet?
