trade may or may not be beneficial to both sides: was the trade between Africa and Europe which involved slaves crossing the Atlantic beneficial to both sides?
Ahem!! Since when was enslaving someone a matter of trade?
since time immemorial, sadly. Ever watch "Gladiator" and dear old Olly Reed?

Anyway, your logic is askew. If Britain leaves the EU then the deal already done between the EU and Canada will lapse. Any new deal which Britain manages to strike with Canada will probably be better than the situation characterised by lack of deals in which Britain finds itself, but it is unlikely to be better than the deal already struck on Britain's behalf by the EU. Give me a good reason why some new deal between a newly isolated Britain and Canada will match the existing deal
One extrmely good reason why a newly liberated UK will be able to strike a better deal with Canada as an independent nation than as part of the EU is that we will no longer be constrained by the trade destroying, insular, protectionist restrictions so beloved of our continental neighbours.
back to the rhetoric. I gave you several reasons, genuine ones, why this is not likely; I could also have mentioned that Britain will be a novice in negotiating such deals. Even if the EU does have protectionist elements - which is true - how can trade deals with outsiders be construed as protectionist? Have you ordered your copy of Ian Dunt's book yet?

That is something like 14% growth pa. Does that sound plausible to you? And what does "goods and services flowing within the Commonwealth" mean?
Alan Henness

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

the "ft" mention seems a bit of a con trick, as this does not come from the Financial Times. Darren Grimes tweets on behalf of Brexit Central, and may have confected these figures; he has just attached his comment, following the dash, to the FT headline. Nothing should surprise us any more, and do not expect any response from coffee.

Having said this, I think this may the source of the claim: http://thecommonwealth.org/media/news/i ... 5-trillion. Trade and investment within the Commonwealth seem to be increasing, but not at the rate implied by the tweet, since the base figures in this article date from 2016, not 2018. Of course, these are simply expectations, and it does not follow that Britain, newly severing itself from its established place in what is already a free trade area (the European Union) would be able to fit into this system.

Some more about Darren Grimes. https://www.independent.co.uk/student/n ... 69601.html. And here is review of possible post-Brexit trade between Britain and Africa (the largest part of the Commonwealth): http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolic ... er-brexit/

Could well be. A 14% growth in trade doesn't depend on 14% growth in output, does it? So quite plausible.
And what does "goods and services flowing within the Commonwealth" mean?
How about "international trade between Commonwealth nations"? Sounds reasonable.....

yes, but see the LSE paper which I posted, especially this:

"One might therefore be forgiven for thinking that in the wake of the Brexit vote on 23 June we are about to witness a reinvigoration of UK trade links with Africa – the continent that is home to the largest number of Commonwealth members (18 out of 53). Yet, while the UK outside the EU may well look to maintain equivalence with existing European trade agreements in Africa, it is unlikely that these will be extended or reformed and the UK will lose the significant influence it once had in shaping EU trade policy towards Africa.
Contrary to the myth that the UK ‘betrayed’ the Commonwealth by joining the EU in 1973, the majority of Commonwealth countries – those located in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific – were in fact incorporated into the EU’s system of trade preferences at this time. Under the 1975 Lomé Convention, this arrangement provided the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries with unilateral preferential access to the EU market, a series of lucrative commodity protocols for bananas, beef, rum and sugar and development finance through the European Development Fund. The EU’s special relationship with the ACP countries served to preserve and extend the UK’s links with this group of former colonies at a time when the Commonwealth was otherwise fractious and divided.
More recently, the EU-ACP relationship has been decisively shaped by a set of controversial negotiations for free trade agreements – known as the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) – initiated by the EU. These negotiations have led to a patchwork of trade arrangements across Africa, in which some countries have signed Economic Partnership Agreements while others make use of unilateral duty free access to the EU market under a scheme called ‘Everything but Arms’. This patchwork of arrangements is unsatisfactory for a number of reasons – not least its potentially disruptive implications for African regional integration. However, it is this reality – rather than any British allegiance to the Commonwealth countries – that will provide the starting point for the UK’s trade relations with Africa following Brexit."

yes, but see the LSE paper which I posted
I don't think that any of that necessarily negates the predicted growth in trade. I can't lay my hands on it right now (not enough time) but growth in international trade was powering away right up until 2008. Now we can see the end of the crisis, it is likely that such increases will resume.

Now, it is the developing world which is growing fastest (again, insufficient time to illustrate). And, as the economy develops, a greater proportion of GDP will be represented by international trade. For example, as people become rich enough to drink whisky, or watch Man U, or eat something more exotic than rice.

So, a combination of international recovery, developing nation growth rates and increased international trade as a proportion of GDP could well account for the suggested 14% gorwth in trade, whether or not we expand trade as a result of leaving the EU.

Shameful that Home Office not sure if they've deported Windrush Brits or not.

What they do know is that hundred of ISIS jihadis have been allowed back from Syria - and "are assessed as no longer being of national security concern".

Sickening.

I would have PUT THIS IN CAPITALS! One oddity about all the propaganda is that facts can be used either way. Thus, though current low employment is being used here to claim that all is well, I remember someone citing high YOUTH unemployment as a reason to leave the EU!
