Latest post of the previous page:

Bit lost on Solus' current avatar being a sci-fi image!

Can't seem to find a format for it that will work in Google Image Search either - damn.

There have been "science-fiction" stories that are set in days gone by - even cowboy stories! But this one has me beat.

Go, on, Solus, be, er, humanist and let us into the story!

Looks like something out of the Jules Verne era.

I would put it at least a century before Jules, unless he wrote "historical-science-fiction"!

Looks closer to Swift's Gulliver's Travels dress-wise.

Solus, let me give it a try: it's a close-up of a poker card, the knight?

Aw, geez, no pressure here! If I told you the year it's set in, you'd get it instantly. I can't tell you the plot, either, no matter how general I make it. (And, keep in mind that it is a prop from a sci-fi film, which by definition could be anything: a ray gun, a handheld computer, a fire hydrant...)

The image, I don't know. Maybe. The setting? No.

I'll say that Verne is a dead-end for this film.

Great guess, but no.

But it is an extreme close-up of something else a gentleman of bygone days would have on his person.

I guess my clue was slightly unfair. Although gents back in the day carried this around with them, today it is mostly associated with the hoi polloi and, depending on where you are, has restrictions upon its usage.

Can I just clear up that this is a detail from an object that would be carried from a man? Or does it depict a man carrying such an object?

The former. A contemporary woman may have one of these as well.

Okay, it's been 24 hours since my last hint so I'll press forward. It's a detail from a pack of cigarettes.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

I was guessing 18th century dress, because of the tunic, but as for the head-gear I was thinking of middle east or India. Though I hadn't put 2 & 2 together, I was, I suupose, thinking on Imperial lines (I suppose the Imperial relates to the British Empire....?) but got the wrong continent entirely. Oh well...

So why that choice of avatar? :)

English gentlemen of the artistic persuasion often dressed in a pseudo Turkish or Indian style in the late 1700s/early 1800s

Mine was from a now defunct newspaper cartoon by the name of Bloom County.
The character is Bill the Cat and is, as you can see a rather torn up crispy critter, to say the least. This is how I feel most of the time and the humor is what keeps me going. If you can read the words on the paper he's reading the comic ran during Newt newt gingrich's reign as speaker of the house and you can see what the artist thinks about his attempts at censorship.
Hate, the offspring of fear cannot exist where understanding reigns supreme

I play World of warcraft, my avatar is a character called draykorinee and I just drew this in 5 seconds on my phone, its really nothing exciting, I have quite a sarcastic humour and I thought it represented it well.

Mine is me sitting through my car. I had just cut the floor out and before welding in a new one, I thought I'd have a picture taken! Anyone care to guess what car it is? :laughter: Not much to go on!
