Latest post of the previous page:

The so-called "reality" shows are worse than game shows. I especially hate them, because even tuning past them for a few seconds they are almost invariably working out completely unethical, devious ways of competing with and harming each other. And this is encouraged by the structure of the shows.

I doubt that you have these in the U.K., but you probably have their equivalents: Fox (faux) News and Rush Limbaugh - demagoguery to the tenth power.

And, similar to Emma's description, a large family of peacocks who have taken up residence up the hill from me. At random intervals during the middle of the night they scream loudly, and it's reminiscent of a cat being slowly eaten by a wolf. Does wonders for one's heart health when suddenly awakened by this.

Ice-cream made from vegetable fat.
Dog owners who say "it's all right, he won't hurt you!"
Pam Ayres.
Crosses/crucifixes worn as jewellery (why would anybody want to wear an instrument of torture round their neck?)

 Football commentaries on the radio
We had the Hearts match on at the Project all afternoon yesterday and it pure did ma heed in. We could have had Radio 3. I had Jazz Record Requests on the way home till I lost the signal somewhere around Blair Atholl. That was quite calming.

Which? The jazz or the silence?

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Probably both, Alan! Mind you I did the journey in two hours and three minutes, the house (hitherto known as the project) is a little nearer. I didn't break the speed limit either.

Clearly, you haven't sampled radio tennis commentary. WTF is that all about? I've yet to meet anyone who a) understands it and b) appreciates it. Come on then. Have you met anyone?

I admit it, Nick. However, it sounds to be equally bad.

I agree, but in a land of singers, surely even the Welsh Rugby crowd is a bit downmarket?

Cycle lanes. They're often too narrow, they sometimes come to an abrupt end in the middle of a terrifying interchange, and the re-confirm in the mind of the motorist the belief that cyclists are not entitled to equal use of the road.

Sorry, old boy, but that is entirely desirable, far too sensible and therefore inadmissible in this thread. Have another go :D

If cycle lanes are put into Room 101, there won't be any cycle lanes. Hmm. Can we put rubbish cycle lane designers in instead?

Hmmm...I've heard of rubbish re-cycling centres (aka Civic Amenity Sites, or Middens in Scotland): are these the same things?

If they were fully integrated into the traffic system, (as in Rotterdam, for example) that would be great. But the UK's streets are not designed for them, so we end up with a couple of pink-and-yellow stripes painted along the gutter. We should get rid of them, emphasise the cyclists equal right to use the road (ie, slow the cars down) and that would get the cyclists off the bloody pavement!
Win-win!

I am convinced that much of the 'cycle lane network' was put in merely to make up the miles for the governemnt stats. (we all know and love those little political white lies, eh?)

don't put cycle lanes in busy crouded ares, put miles of cycle lane on the unused road where it will not annoy anyone and there you go, excellent government stats, tax payers money wasted and a few dead cyclists to boot. new labour in a nutshell. (the cycle lane on the unused road bit is completely true.)

Education speak, especially "learners"

The only time I'd ever consent to that title is when learning to drive.

At least on R4 it's just the pips...

unless...

it's Elizabeth Windsor's birthday - not sure which one :)

Or even worse (dunno if they still do it)...

A pope croaks. Which made me think I was in some weird time loop whenever it was one died a week after another.

So I'd put the national anthem and sombre dead pope music into Room 101, so we will never again be rudely awoken by such irrelevancies.

The national anthem still gets played every night at 1am on Radio 4, just after the shipping forecast.
