Where were you in the 1960s ?

#1 Post by jaywhat » December 11th, 2010, 9:38 am

Dave B said (in Interview the Person Below You thread)-
Perhaps the strangest flight I took (in the RAF) was my first ever, sitting in the crew rest seats (the RAF book every seat when they charter a civvy aircraft) playing poker with the other three and rocking and feeding a baby that kept crying and disturbing the families in the main cabin. I was 18 and a week and on my way to Cyprus, just in time for the natives to start playing silly buggers again. 1963. Blimey - I feel old!

In 1963 I was in my second year teaching in London and thinking of going abroad to earn a bit more. It was the coldest iciest winter for yonks (as some of you have said) and the little cottage (in Stevenage) had a frozen solid outside toilet (no bathroom) and baby number 2 (Sue)was on the way (August).

1962 till 1966 I attended what was probably the worst "secondary school" in England.

I started my first job the same week England won the world cup, and stayed in that job (upholstery) for 12 years.

Early 60's I was in the RAF until I was caught "double bunking", the colloquial name for lesbians sharing a bed. There was no official name for it, they did not want to acknowledge the existence of the likes of me and my kind. Medically discharged as unfit for Royal Air Force service. The story of what happened next is something I use in the Highland Rainbow Folk presentation. This is a group sponsored by Age Scotland which aims to raise awareness of the problems faced by older Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgendered people. If anyone is interested in hearing about the group please p.m. me and I will start a new topic.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

At primary school. Primary 3 if I remember correctly. I hated school.

A couple of years spent in the US navy on board an aircraft carrier. Then on to college, paid for mostly by the G.I. bill. Good times for the most part.

Started secondary school in 1960. In 1967 went to Edge Hill College of Education in Ormskirk, Lancs to do my teacher training.

In about 1964 we were very excited by the arrival of Radio Caroline North, which sailed up the Irish Sea and anchored off Ramsey.

January 1963 started with the West Riding Constabulary (now West Yorkshire Police) as PC1142. Served until 1967. Joined the Yorkshire force as a means of getting away from my unspeakable family in the Wirral, Cheshire.

Best of the '60s? The Beatles and the Stones.

Worst? The LE Velocette motorbike they made me ride. So incredibly unstable and hopeless in the hills around Sowerby Bridge. So undignified for a policeman to be seen falling off.

Oh, and the lethally bad handling of Ford Zephyr police cars.......frightening.

did you mean "bad" or "bed"? Other thing is that I notice three at least of you were in confrontational jobs like police or armed forces - were you humanists at the time? Had it been invented?

Agreed, jj, Vespas were far superior, used to do wheelies on my mate's (much to his consternation!)

I liked the old Velocette though - dunno why, nothing special just looked like a bike that did a job.Image

Wait a minute...

*Thinks hard*

It's coming back.....

*Mists begin to clear*

In April 1968, I celebrated my 10th birthday in Paris. Mummy and Daddy gave me a flyover for my electic car track. How cool was that!?!

A month later, Paris was in chaos.

Nothing to do with me, guv!

Honest! :innocence:

*mists descend again*
