The above is my best effort at putting a message from J and N up. (See attachment for an idea of how it should look.)

I echo the sentiments, of course, but what do people think of Darwin Day? Personally, I like it but want it moved to the summer.

Since "The Origin..." was published in November and the Beagle sailed in December those are not much help as alternative dates either.

Split the difference and make it mid-summer?

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

To celebrate his birthday I will share with the forum one of my favourite quotes from Darwin. "A man's friendships are one of the best measures of his worth"

I consider some of my best friends to be those on this forum.

Sorry to say that Darwin Day rather passes me by, in the same way xmas/easter/eid/passover/whatever day and national no smoking day does  I've always reckoned we don't need a specific day to celebrate or feel guilty, we can do that just fine in our own time... though I love that Jaywhat and Ninny's cat is named Darwin :D
I do appreciate the consciousness raising aspect though. Is it best to do that in the summer so folk might get out and about? Depends on the hard work of folk organising stuff.

However, I love the quote Val, and fully agree with your sentiment

I know what you mean, Fia, about naming a specific day after the great man but at least it brings him back into public notice. As for our cat, he went the same way as Charles nearly 2 years ago. We now have Dora - named after Dora Thewlis the young Huddersfield textile worker and suffragette who was arrested very publicly by two burly policemen and got her pic on the front pages.

Might as well put this here...

I don't usually like rap, but this guy was at TAM London the year before last. Brilliant. He had us all singing the chorus.

Talking of Darwin (which I do all the time) Ninny and I were at our local garden centre; for coffee and cake and to buy some plants for our front garden because the hedge has been replaced by a fence and it all looks bare.
As we chatted about this and that dwarf fruit tree a most handsome totally white cat came purring around us and reminded us of our long lost cat named Darwin. Later we bought a rose bush called 'Darwin'. Thanks for everything to Charles.

In 1809, on the 13 February, Charles Darwin was one day old.
I forgot it was his birthday yesterday and so now I wish everyone a late Happy Darwin Day.

Here is a verse from a recent poem of mine.

I pulled the dead fish out of the pond
filled the bird tray with dried meal worms
topped up the niger seed feeder just for
the gold finches that have gone away
to winter on the Galapagos respecting
Charles Darwin and his recent birthday

Today, we had a gold finch visiting us on the niger seeds. It makes me think that they are back from the Galapagos Islands. !
