Favourite Quotes...

What are your guy's favorite quotes?

One of mind is: "Wanting to reform the world without discovering one's true self is like trying to cover the world with leather to avoid the pain of walking on stones and thorns. It is much simpler to wear shoes."

I haven't got a "guy" so I don't know.

Ah, "favorite"; seems to confirm my feeling that you were one from our ex-colony - separated by a common language after Mr Webster mangled things somewhat.

OK - it's a lengthy quote, but I love it. It just makes me wish I'd been around in the sixties.... What happened people?????

********************************

“It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era — the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run... but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant...

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning...

And that, I think, was the handle — that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply PREVAIL. There was no point in fighting — on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave...

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high water mark — that place where the wave finally broke, and rolled back.” ― Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."
Abraham Lincoln

"You can be in my dream if I can be in yours."
Bob Dylan

"Imagine there's no heaven, It's easy if you try.
No hell below us, above us only sky.
Imagine all the people living for today.
Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do.
Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion too.
Imagine all the people living life in peace.

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us and the world will be as one."
John Lennon
"There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." - From the film "Top Gun"

I have several favourites (in addition to my sig):

Electricity and magnetism are those forces of nature by which people who know nothing about electricity and magnetism can explain everything.
(Egon Friedell)

The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition.
(Carl Sagan)

Nothing is so ignorant as the ignorance of certainty.
(Aldous Huxley)
AND:
There’s nothing as deceptive as an obvious fact.
(Arthur Conan Doyle)

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
(H.L.Mencken)

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Tsze-kung asked, saying, "Is there one word which may serve as a rule of practice for all one's life?" The Master said, "Is not Reciprocity such a word? What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others."

"If God had wanted us to know that he existed he would not have allowed the Bible to be written" - me just now, but maybe it appears somewhere in this long list:

just come across this in the "English Dance and Song" journal of all places; an article on Henry Burstow, who was a wonderful 19C singer and church bell-ringer but, as an atheist, never stayed to the services. The vicar asked him why, and he said "I fetch 'em in and I leaves you to drive 'em away"

I first heard it from Dick Gaughan, but I think it's from someone else:

It's not what you're born with
It's what you choose to bear
It's not how big your share is
It's how much you can share
It's not the fights you dreamed of
It's those you really fought
It's not what you're given
It's what you do with what you've got

One of these:

If I have seen farther then it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants

When you're close to tears, remember: someday it'll all be over.

Life's battles don't always go,
To the one with the better plan,
For, more often than not, you will win,
If only you think you can.

Sir Isaac Newton, IIRC. Also, I think it was a jibe at Hooke, rather than a nod at those scientists who went before him, but I'm not sure and need to look it up...

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Yes, Robert Hooke was exactly not the tallest of men. (May I suggest that anyone who wants to get a good feel of the relationship between these men could do a lot worse than read Stuart Clark's The Sensorium of God.)

So Sir Ike might have had a mental, ". . . not pygmies like you!" tagged on the end of his saying?

I really like this one.

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.
