Did that when my kids were in utero (woolly hats & jumpers in micro), but not a lot since. Used to love the looks I got on public transport (big bloke knitting)Ninny wrote:Knitting. Just saying!

I find it very therapeutic, and incidentally good for my hands, which are no longer stiff and painful. Also opens up a world of fellow knitters, who seem to be contented good-tempered people. See also The Knitting and Crochet Guildhttp://kcguild.org.uk/

Now, which comes first? Does knitting make people contented and good natured or is it that contented and good natured people make good knitters?Ninny wrote:I find it very therapeutic, and incidentally good for my hands, which are no longer stiff and painful. Mind you, I have heard old ladies who can knit and slag off the rest of the world, in fairly colourful language, at the same time. Favourite occupation of those in the front row at the Guillotine was it not!

The Man of Kent, a local pub near me, hosts a knitting and sewing circle called "Stitch and Bitch". At least they are honest!
Re: Hobbies
The women knitting at the guillotine were constant knitters, making stockings for the rich. They couldn't afford to stop just because there was an execution. It's the same today, we knit while watching tv. Only today, we make useful things for our loved people.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:
1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

I collect alligators (not real ones). Is that a hobby? I visit lighthouses. Maybe not so unique.
Re: Hobbies
Just alligators or do you also collect crocodiles? And WHY?! They're hardly cute and furry :-)Catriona wrote:I collect alligators (not real ones). Is that a hobby? I visit lighthouses. Maybe not so unique.

Welcome to TH, Catriona! Collecting things is a hobby, so alligators count.Catriona wrote:I collect alligators (not real ones). Is that a hobby? I visit lighthouses. Maybe not so unique.
Carpe diem. Savour every moment.

My children were concerned with the number of volunteering activities I have and told me I should cut it down and make time for myself. I thought about it and decided they were right. I fact I really needed a hobby. So I reclassified the work I do for the community radio station. Instead of being volunteering, it's now my hobby, thus reducing the volunteering by a lot.

I regard my forays into folk songs as a hobby. After all, it is scarcely a charitable thing to do....

I regard my community radio stuff for ForestFM as "developing a new skill" - apparently, this is a good thing to do as one ageslewist wrote: So I reclassified the work I do for the community radio station. Instead of being volunteering, it's now my hobby, thus reducing the volunteering by a lot.

You don't appear to have mentioned our swing dancing, Alan. We've been doing it a year now and are getting sort of quite average at it.
