Latest post of the previous page:

:laughter: Where was it that you had to whistle to locate it?

While wandering in the fields today with the dogs, I marvelled at all the animal tracks in the snow and wished I could identify them. When my dog came bounding over the hill, chasing 2 sheep, I realised what they were!

I have wondered what he would do if he came upon some sheep when we were out (I take great care to avoid sheep-but they often turn up in unexpected places). Now I know-he come when I call him back!

What a star!!

In our large back garden of course, though he did sometimes wander further afield.

Lucky you are, both of you. Pepper, fuzzy little bastard that he is, will only come back if I call him when the sun has reached its zenith, the earth is turning just so on its axis, the temp is between 15-20 degrees and I'm wearing red shoes. IOW, almost freaking never! :D However, if we're inside the apt and I call for Ziggy (the cat), Pepper will come running as fast as you can blink. Attention hound.

Just seen this: Eddie Izzard and Pavlov's Dogs v Pavlov's Cat.

I don't think it's true though.

I've been busy elsewhere Nick, hence my delay. Unlike Humans I think cats (and dogs) all make the same noises; is to be seen if each noise assumes the same meaning among them all over the world (?) I doubt it however but it would be interesting to know; I'm sure studies have been done on this topic.

In Italy or Switzerland we call cats by a strange noise not easy to write; it is the noise that you make when you give a kiss.

I have a cute little black and white moggie named Piddlywink, called 'Piddles' for short. Her name always raises questions.
I've got another called Letterbox -- Which I have to articulate carefully or I'll get raised eyebrows.

As y'do, I wondered about the etymology of "moggie". As usual, the internet is your friend. Wiktionary gave me this:
In sense “mongrel cat”, 1911, of Unknown origin, possibly Cockney. Possibly derived from maggie, margie or mog, all short forms of the female name Margaret.

Original sense, early 19th century, is a term of affection for a calf or cow, which may have been transfered to cats under urbanization. Later 19th century meaning of “untidy woman, slattern”. Alternatively, in Lancashire, moggy traditionally applied to mice, not cats, and a cat was hence a moggy catcher, which may have been abbreviated to moggy.[1][2]

Apparently not an abbreviation of similar-seeming mongrel, though perhaps from similar Old English/Proto-Germanic source; see mongrel for details.
And "Wiki" apparently is a Hawaiian word for "fast". "Wiki wiki" is akin to "chop chop!" Well, I never!

Why do dogs like snow so much? Especially as I would have thought it deadens scents.....

Cats have more sense than to go out in the snow unless they have to. Makes for mightily grumpy felines and dark looks though... hey puss, if I could change the weather I'd have done so by now

Although I feel almost sorry for the unbricked wee dogs. I saw 2 of them today doing their utmost to be tall to avoid their still intact bits dragging through the snow... perhaps someone needs to knit them wee ballwarmers :D

Ha! I took the dog out yesterday and he stopped on the path to the marina, plunged his rather long muzzle into 6" of snow and came out with what looked like a chicken bone, I managed to get it off him before he choked on it.

Don't underestimate the power of a dogs snout, the drug dogs at the ferry terminal can sniff out a single spliff sealed in a condom and inserted.................Somewhere, and they do.

A dog has 220 million olfactory receptors in its nose, while humans have about 5 million, I believe cats have around 10 million, making them twice as good as us at sniffing things out but not a patch on dogs.
1 up for the dogs.

One of our two drug dogs is a springer Nick, (your fav) the other is a lab.

I'm pretty sure the opposite is actually the case. People who foxhunt seem to say that hard frost and snow make for a good chase because the scent lingers.

I could be wrong, though. But I do know that search and rescue dogs can detect scent under many feet of snow.
After the war, the Swiss Alpine Club, reviewed its normal method for finding the victims of avalanches, which involves a system of inserting a rod into the snow in the hope of feeling it strike a body. This 'probing' is done by a strictly disciplined line-out of personnel inserting the probes at pre-determined intervals. It is a very slow method and whilst being very thorough gives a very limited chance of finding the victim alive. They considered the previous success of dogs in the rescue role, and decided to train dogs for avalanche work for their own rescue network. This met with continued success and avalanche dog training centres have become widespread throughout the Alps.

You may notice that the vast majority of dogs pictured on this site are border collies. I say no more.

Thanks Alan, I'd almost forgotten my fav breed :D

I remember delivering a very expensive 60ft ketch back to the Channel Islands, where we were boarded by Customs officials with a Springer Spaniel sniffer dog, who, as usual, was full-of-get-up-and-go. No drugs on board, but the owner's face drained of blood as he watched the hyper-active beast scrabbling with his claws all over the boat's beautiful wooden interior....

And, of course, if you step in a pile of dogs' doo-doos at the airport, the chances are the explosives sniffer dog has found some.....

I love springers! I saw a signature recently on a dog forum
"inside every springer is an idiot trying to get out"

and saw a tee shirt advertised with pictures of 2 leaping springers, saying

"Springers in the air..."

They just look so deleriously happy all the time. They make me smile.

That's fantastic, Maria.
Reminds of the night I saw, on a freezing street on a Leeds council estate, a crisp packet moving along the road in a very determined manner. It had the back end of a hedgehog sticking out of it! (Sadly, I didn't have a video camera. But very few people had them in 1980.)

Plum loves it too. I think she was a bit surprised at how deep it was this year.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?
