In Our Time/Lysenko

#1 Post by Tetenterre » February 4th, 2017, 2:08 am

I've long considered In Our Time to be one of the consistently most intelligent programmes on radio. Anywhere. I have hundreds of the podcasts on a memory stick to listen to in the car. Yesterday, the one on Lysenkoism came on. Am I imagining it, or is there an uncanny similarity between the "alternative facts"/science denialism of the likes of Trump & Farage and what was going on in the Soviet Union in the middle of the 20th century?

Certainly agree with you about In Our Time - some are deadly boring but on the whole fascinating, showing the depth of knowledge some have for their subject.

Not listened to the Lysenko one but there have certainly been many comparison of current times to Nineteen Eighty-Four, Animal Farm and particularly the Nazi era, control of the media, denouncement of 'enemies of the State', etc.

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

And now we have the disparaging of the judiciary. Daily Mail and Robert Mugabe come to mind...
