Latest post of the previous page:

Back to serious stuff.

Yesterday there was rime on the Velux window when I went through for my shower; today, although it's grey, there's a good view of Braeriach and the dusting of snow on the top. Winter is on its way.

While we are whining....had 6-7 inches of snow on Tuesday and it is -8°C here this AM. Should warm up again by Sunday to about 5°C.

Well, I was going to complain about our weather going from a high of 77F/25C yesterday to a high of 52F/11C today, but after reading the last several posts, I'm just going to shut up.

At least it's clear! First observing opportunity here for weeks (even though it will be blighted by a nearly full Moon).

Hurricane Sandy is scheduled to hit the East Coast of the US by 2am tonight. Emergency warnings have been issued for NYC. Slightly closer to home, preparing for heavy and steady rain for about 3 days with very high winds. oh yay! Still, at least it isn't a blizzard...

Oh dear! I heard the name Sandy mentioned, but I had no idea it was the name of a hurricane! Batten down the hatches!

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Weather 'experts" are indicating that this one might be like Hurricane Irene of some years ago. I'll wait and see. I heard along the coast that people couldn't buy water and bread etc. Guess they're battening down alright.

Let's hope they don't get arrested for not communicating the risk properly!

Or get blamed for being too apocalyptic if it all fizzles out.

However, unfortunately, with Sandy coming in from the East and another major storm meeting it from the west it seems that may not be much of a hope.

Clear communication is key, isn't it?

Dave, I suppose it's better to be on the apocolyptic side just in case. Either way, I wouldn't want to be a weather forecaster. They get no end of teasing. Nice snapshot of the upcoming storm!

I take you've heard about the Italian earthquake scientists who were jailed for six years last week?

We better wait as the judgement papers have not been released yet. Rumours talk that scientists delivered the correct "warning" to the head of protection service (fire brigade) and this last recommended (or ordered) scientists to conceal the truth for fear of uncontrolled tumult; in other words: better dead than run outside and clog :sad2: roads.

Bureaucrats...gotta luv 'em. Our West Coast experienced a 7.7 earthquake on Saturday. Locals in small towns like Bella Coola headed for higher ground without waiting for the tsunami warning from the British Columbia government. That warning came more than an hour after the quake!. The first warnings actually came from the Americans - within minutes of the quake. Towns up and down the Inside Passage needed to head to high ground much sooner than an hour!!!!

The explanation from the bureaucrats: "We have a priority list for informing folks of tsunami warnings: first our own committee members, secondly government, thirdly the RCMP and lastly...the public!!!!!!!" This took over an hour. If the quake had been one with vertical motion, folks along the coast would have been inundated with water and if they had not felt the shaking they would have had no warning. As luck would have it, no significant tsunami was formed.

The old cover your ass crap yet again.

Don't they know that in the 21st century they can send one multi-addressed message to all concerned? It only takes 30 seconds!

On "The Daily Rundown" on MSNBC this morning, it was brought up that we had an average of 7 named (severe or big enough to be given a name) storms in the 70's and that average has gone up to 18 named storms in 2012. It is recommened that when they start to rebuild on the east coast line, that they back things further away from the actual coast line, since it will be shrinking as time goes by.

Here in Michigan, we are getting some of the effects of Sandy. Rain and wind with strong wind gusts at times. Not too bad for us though. Plus, since we have a lot of lake effect weather, we are rather used to the rain and wind.
