1058Not much seems to have happened in that year.
I got the roadster yesterday. It is a different concept. For years we bought cars for their ability to carry the five of us and all our gear, starting with prams, carry cots, baby seats, the accoutrements of a young family. Price came into it and we always looked for the best deal we could find. Then we bought a caravan and the car had to be a good tow car, especially given the distances we drove in Europe. Gradually we were able to choose what we wanted but my present main car would have been perfect when the children were small, with lots of room and even seven seats to carry the pals.
The BMW Z4 is a study in selfishness, with two seats, modest boot, blistering performance and less than ideal fuel economy. I should be ashamed but I'm not.
This car is an alternative to worrying the children. After all, when I mentioned motor cycles to my daughter she looked at me and said, Oh Dad, I would just worry about you. #1 son was no more encouraging. He gave me a lecture on the statistics of motor cycle ownership and the number of men my age who try to regain their lost youth through motor cycle purchase and kill themselves quite quickly. Surely #2 son would be positive? He just gave me a withering look and said, Dad, do you really think that's a good idea?
So I'll drive my Beemer with pleasure, carefully and with due respect for other road users, especially motor cyclists.
