Ah, if that was written back then the context changes with the shift in language - makes it far more understandable. "Unintermitted" is rather archaic now, but so is the whole style. I read a book on manners from the late 1600s, fascinating to see how certain words were used then. I loved the idea that I might have been described as a "vulgar articifer" - a common, if skilled, person who made things. Below me would have come the, "rude mechanical", the uneducated labourer.

only by unintermitted Agitation can a people be kept sufficiently awake to principle not to let liberty be smothered in material prosperity.

Hmmm... That may be true in some circumstances, but ISTM that once a person achieves a degree of material prosperity, they then start hankering for other things, like democracy and other freedoms. Bread and circuses seem to delay this only so long....

Not sure at all what I think about this stuff so I will say nothing except that one person may do this and another that. One cannot generalise.
To some, wanting more is just greed to others it is quite natural and and 'human'.

I think secular in those days meant "of the world" as opposed to being in a secluded monastic order. Secular priests lived like any other person rather than in a secluded order.

1083 Just another, boring, common year . . .

I thought that 1084 was a Glaswegian theatre group but a quick search shows me I'm clearly wrong

You were nearly right Fia. It was the 784 theatre company. The root of the name was the idea that 7 percent of people had 84 percent of the wealth. Wiki article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7:84

I doubt the wealth stats have changed much...

Old "Oily Bob", slipped of the mortal coil, eh?

1092:

King Godwin's land off Kent inundated by the sea - now called "Goodwin Sands" - and England annexes Cumbria.

Meanwhile the Chinese are building an astronomical clock-tower and mapping the heavens.

1092

England annexed Cumbria from the celtic kingdom of Strathclyde, apparently.

oops, cross posted... er...
back to wiki who helpfully tell us that 1093 is the natural number following 1092 and preceding 1094

More interestingly: 1093 is a prime number. Together with 1091 and 1097, it forms a prime triplet. It is a happy prime and a star prime.

How sweet, happy and a star :D
