Ah, if that was written back then the context changes with the shift in language - makes it far more understandable. "Unintermitted" is rather archaic now, but so is the whole style. I read a book on manners from the late 1600s, fascinating to see how certain words were used then. I loved the idea that I might have been described as a "vulgar articifer" - a common, if skilled, person who made things. Below me would have come the, "rude mechanical", the uneducated labourer.1884
