Room 101
Room 101
Here's the obligatory Room 101 thread. May I suggest we keep things like towns and countries out of it (I once saw the whole town of Portsmouth offered up on the TV programme). I also think religion and everything related to it would be pretty predictable for this forum - can we just take that as a given? There must be other things that wind us up!
For me it's McDonald's hamburgers. They are, frankly, disgusting. Actually the whole "restaurant" (for want of a better word) chain bearing the name McDonald is disgusting. The staff are idiots, the toilets are foul, the food, AFAIC, is inedible.
The worst thing about them is that they have taken over some fine old buildings.
Get rid of McDonalds!

Probably not - sorry for the sweeping generalisation. My own recent experiences of the staff there have been abysmal but that doesn't mean they're all idiots, only some of them.Lifelinking wrote:I know this is not really a serious thread Doug, but is this fair? I might agreed with McDonalds going in to room 101, but this seems a bit harsh. The staff are idiots
Having been disturbed three times last night, another thing I'd sling in Room 101 is car alarms. Who invented them? And where does s/he live?

No burger flipping for me Zoe. Maybe I should explain.
When I was a young chap still at the school, my first paying job involved doing weekend shifts at an industrial laundry. The job involved tasks such as cleaning the filters at the back of the machines. Dirty, hot work that occasionally involved getting burns from the pipes on the forearms if you weren't careful. Around the same time my old man was working long hours in a factory, and my mother was working as an auxilliary nurse and taking cleaning jobs.
(tell that to the young people today...... )
I really have no complaints. My home life was full of laughter, and love, and books. There were and are so many folk out there who have it much, much harder than I could even dream of. But when I see folk of all ages and from many different backgrounds taking often menial jobs at places like McDonalds and elsewhere, I am reminded that each one of them will have their own reasons for being there, their own stories to tell.

I can assure that I DO NOT design car alarms...only house alarms. Of course, any that I have designed will NEVER go off in the middle of the night!DougS wrote:Having been disturbed three times last night, another thing I'd sling in Room 101 is car alarms. Indeed. When I taught English to foreign students many of them found work at McDonalds. Most of those kids came from very comfortable backgrounds and had already graduated from university. They were just in London for a year or so to learn English fluently.Lifelinking wrote: But when I see folk of all ages and from many different backgrounds taking often menial jobs at places like McDonalds and elsewhere, I am reminded that each one of them will have their own reasons for being there, their own stories to tell.

What about that one that was so sensitive it was set off by a fax machine, for pity's sake!Alan H wrote:I can assure that I DO NOT design car alarms...only house alarms. I'd put all the video/audio cassette wrappers and other packaging that I can't open easily into Room 101
There are so many things I'd like to put in there but I'll confine myself to the three that have irritated me just today.
1. I had sausages and mash for lunch. I hereby nominate all sausages that taste like one of my knitted jumpers.
2. da da DA da. da DA da. da DA da. DA DA. Recognise it? It's the damn NOKIA ringtone!
3. People who don't dispose of their chewing gum in a clean and considerate manner!
