Ban a vowel

#1 Post by jaywhat » April 9th, 2014, 10:50 am

Did a writing exercise recently at a 'poetry' workshop. It involved rewriting a verse leaving out one vowel.
Here is 'Hark, hark the dogs do bark. The beggars are coming to town....' without the latter 'a'.

Listen out
The dogs do shout
Poor men will be in town
Some in kilts
Some on stilts
One is his velvet gown.

We Wally Wanky
Runs through the town,
Up steps and down steps.
He wears a naff gown.

Jaywhat re-wrote 'Hark, hark, the dogs do bark' without using the letter 'a'.
I re-wrote 'Wee Willie Winkie' without using the letter 'i'.
Good game? I think it has potential.

Spot the missing vowel:

Earth Centre to Captain Pat
Earth Centre to Captain Pat
Take three vitamins and wear that spaceman’s hat
Earth Centre to Captain Pat.

Jack Spratt could eat no fat

Jim Phipps did not like chips
His wife did not like fish
So between the two of them
They left nowt in the dish.

why not!

Jim with Jill

Jim with Jill went up the hill
To fetch two jugs of liquid
Jim fell down; he broke his crown
Which Jill thought very stupid

Then up Jim got but Jill did not
He left her on her own
Hid in the shed and went to bed
She woke him with her phone

Am I being pedantic?

"I" has been substituted by "y" in the first two lines and omitted in "night" along with "gh" and a double "f" added.

Am I overthinking this, or is my Asperger's showing?

I must go down to da surf again, to da solitary surf and da sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to point it by.

Wally is not a respelling of Willie, it's short for Walter, not William. Wanky is likewise a different surname, not a mere respelling of Winkie. Winkie means sleepy, Wanky means something else altogether.

Naff is a comment on Wally Wanky's sartorial choices.

Yes, I got the song, but I still don't understand the game.

Shouldn't it be
Grund cntl t majur Tm,
Grand cntrl t majur TM
Take yur prtein pills and put yur helmet n.

I'm sure I'm missing something other than the letter in all this.

Yes, I got the song, but I still don't understand the game.
The object is to find words that do not contain the banned vowel as substitutes then making the whole thing make some kind of sense and, hopefully, maintaining the theme of the original. Sort of.

Thank you.

Took me ages too to work out what was going on  But guess I'll have a go as it sounds fun:

up above the world so small
such a thought we are not all.

Dwarfish Miss Pillock
Perched on a hillock
Slurping her curds and whey
Along came a spider
Who landed beside her
And scared Miss Pillock away.

:yahbooh: Dwarfish has an a and an i:
Perched has an e; (two, actually)
Pillock has an o;
Slurping has a u;
Whey has a y; just for completeness.

Which of the vowels were you trying to avoid? I asked, wryly.

(I'm just being facetious, Dave!)

I know, I know!

I was trying so hard to think up anything that I forgot the rules!

Anyway, why the fingers smiley, I saw your error but was not one of those who pointed it out!
