Latest post of the previous page:

All male circumcision and FGM is wrong if it is for religious reasons. If there is a medical reason, then that is different.

Save the Acton FGM Community Clinic

Aro Dirie
Potters Bar, United Kingdom

Acton’s FGM Community Clinic which supports thousands of women will be forced to close after March as it has lost it’s funding.

FGM Survivor Aida Silvestre said: "This clinic is vital for FGM victims. It provides a great deal of support physically and emotionally by creating a safe environment for girls/women to talk about their problems and experiences while maintaining their anonymity. The clinic changes lives and saves lives."
The clinic was set up in 2007 to provide a specialist service for women with FGM. Over the last 10 years we have helped more than 1,000 women. We have carried out the reversal procedure for more than 500 women. We have referred over 200 women for specialist gynaecology consultations; and we have provided counselling for over 150 women. Many women have told us that "this service changed my life after suffering years of pain".
This clinic was set up in response to the needs of local women who were unable to access specialist services to help them with the health consequences that they were suffering as a result of FGM. The community setting was chosen to make the service more accessible, less intimidating than the hospital and because it is supposed to be cheaper.
We have received notice that Ealing Council will cease funding the clinic post March 2017.
This a community-based and midwife-led service. It is especially targeted at younger women to give them help and support before or just after they get married but we also see a number of older women who have problems of long term pain, incontinence, fistulas and prolapses. These women are referred on for specialist uro-gynaecology services. We also provide 1-1 counselling or referral on to specialist long term counselling. Our ethos is to never turn anyone away. Women do not need a referral from their GP. They can self-refer and there are no geographical boundaries. It is a fast-track service – we see all women within 2 weeks of them contacting us.
Over the last 10 years we have also trained more than one hundred professionals how to deinfibulate and also trained thousands of multi-agency professionals through workshops, seminars etc
During a clinic consultation we carry out a physical and mental health assessment. We educate all women of the Law in the U.K. and the health consequences of FGM. We diagnose and explain to them what Type of FGM they have. We also carry out an essential safeguarding risk assessment of female children or younger siblings that may be at risk of, or have had, FGM.
We often see women that have never spoken about their FGM before and do not feel that they can discuss FGM with their GP and they frequently reveal that they have suffered years of urinary tract infections and painful sexual intercourse prior to accessing our service.
In 2011 we won a Guardian Public Service Award in the category of Diversity and Equality.
The clinic was visited by MP Jane Ellison (and former Public Health Minister) in February 2016 as an example of a gold standard, holistic FGM service that has been used as a blueprint for services across the UK.
This service will close at the end of March, 2017 unless we act NOW.
Please help us Save the Acton Clinic and sign this petition.
Thank you

Where are the women?
I noticed that all the posters on this topic are male, hence their nonchalance about FGM. They probably don't even know what a clitoris is! It's equivalent to the male penis and cutting it out is equivalent to cutting off the male penis. The girl will never know the pleasure of sexual intercourse, on the contrary, every time she is layed she will only experience great pain! Because the operation is carried out by witch doctors without any anesthetics or antibiotics it is excrutiatingly painful and can cause serious infection that she will carry her whole life and might even kill her! Try to find a woman who has been FGMed and let her tell you her experience! You are in for a shock!

What nonchalance?
Alan Henness

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

Hello!
(I posted on p1 of this thread)

The OP was specifically about male circumcision, and post 2 asked what about the females.
Just because I'm female doesn't mean I don't have a scoobie about male genitalia so I think it can safely be said of the straight men here that they at least know where a clitoris is and what it's for.

I'm opposed to any genital mutilation performed on children unless there's a specific medical reason. When children grow into adults they can make their own choices.

Thank you Jaywhat x Signed.
(but as my usual practice I stripped off your "recruiter" details from the URL as I think that is info they shouldn't have. That's for another thread though.)

Danish doctors have the right of it
“Circumcision of boys without a medical indication is ethically unacceptable when the procedure is carried out without informed consent from the person undergoing the surgery. Therefore, circumcision should not be performed before the boy is 18 years old and able to decide whether this is an operation he wants.”
Until I read this article I didn't realise what an industry male circumcision is in the US. Guess that's what you get with private healthcare :headbang:
