AUSTRALIA's former High Commissioner Alexander Downer said Britain could easily secure a free trade agreement with his country shortly after Brexit, despite Project Fear suggesting the UK would struggle to find new trade partners after leaving the bloc.

Westmonster is well named - it is a monster of lies and irrelevant propaganda. So a spat between two countries which have a long history of antagonism is somehow relevant to Brexit. How? The Leave campaign lied on many issues, but one of the worst lies concerned Turkish entry to the EU. Britain, if we stayed in the EU, could have vetoed any such application to join, but somehow the mere thought of Turkey joining was used as a reason to Brexit - added to which was the suggestion that Syria and Iraq were next on the list!

I can almost understand why some voted to leave if this was the lying tripe that was dished up to them.
Alan Henness

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

BREXIT BLOCKING MPs defy Brexit with new plans to keep Britain in Customs Union – but voters wouldn’t back re-joining EU after we leave

you have already posted this. Did the door reopen? More important, what is the value of the opinion of some former French president? If he had said the opposite, I doubt that thiw would appear in the thread

which are? Well, one is the humanistic belief in the general good rather than a narrowly conceived national good. But even if one is patriotic and believes only in the national good, it does not follow that one should in some way or other believe that the path that what one's country is following is the right one for it, especially if it is one not shared by the large majority of the country's elected representatives. These decent people have been morally blackmailed, by a foolish experiment in direct democracy, to pretend to agree to policies which in fact they believe are harmful. How can this good for the country? Does that answer you?

:laughter: It's rather funny how we can draw completely different inferences from a simple phrase! I was making the distinction between believing in your country and any other. I was looking for an alternative country. :) And "believe in" meaning something like worth supporting or contributing to. (I was attributing you capitals to thick thumbs, not shouting. Was I right to do so..?) So you may have a different answer if you take that perspective. I was also rather startled by an apparent assertion that no contribution to the society in which one lives had any merit, though, based on your response, I don't think that was your intention.

So, to your response:
Nick wrote: well, animist, have you considered the alternatives....? :)
which are? Well, one is the humanistic belief in the general good rather than a narrowly conceived national good.
So should we care rather more for the destruction of the economies of Greece and other EU nations than you have so far thought...?
But even if one is patriotic and believes only in the national good, it does not follow that one should in some way or other believe that the path that what one's country is following is the right one for it,
OK, but I took your assertion as an abandonment of all hope of changing it, through the democratic process, say. Not what you meant...? :)
especially if it is one not shared by the large majority of the country's elected representatives. These decent people have been morally blackmailed, by a foolish experiment in direct democracy, to pretend to agree to policies which in fact they believe are harmful. How can this good for the country?
This is not "belief in ones country", but belief in the policy being persued by any particular government- rather different, I'd say.
Does that answer you?
Not in the way I was expecting! :laughter:
