it is hard to know how to react to the news that one silly Tory Brexit faction has rubbished the silly ideas of another. Look everyone, we are leaving the EU in ten months, and at least the Labour Party has belatedly committed itself to a customs union arrangement with the EU which will replicate the existing oneAlan H wrote:coffee wrote:May's customs partnership 'all but dead' after Gove joins Boris in savaging proposal: Brexit News for Monday 14 May

If these weren't the idiots that are in power and supposedly running the country on our behalf, it'd make a great comedy sketch.animist wrote:it is hard to know how to react to the news that one silly Tory Brexit faction has rubbished the silly ideas of another. TURKISH president Recep Tayyip Erdogan will make a bid to improve trade relations with Britain after Brexit as he continues his controversial three-day visit to the UK amid ongoing controversy.

ok Nick, on your point 1, I don't remember much discussion between us on this aspect of Brexit, so where is your evidence that all these new overseas trade deals are just round the corner? Point 2 - the EU, as you correctly said the other day, have already ruled the silly Tory ideas our of court, but how could you possible know that some version of the present arrangements could not be devised if there were the will on both sides? As you know, Turkey has its own customs arrangements with the EU without being a member. Point 3 barely deserves comment, but I doubt that JC would be personally in control - much more likely to be Keir StarmerNick wrote:Only 3 things wrong with that:animist wrote:it is hard to know how to react to the news that one silly Tory Brexit faction has rubbished the silly ideas of another. 1) Such a customs union would mean we wouldn't be able to conclude trade deals with anyone else, thus making it worse than being in the EU, as we would be unable to influence EU policy (not that has been exactly a strength...)
2) 1) Any Customs Union other than "The" Customs Union isn't available, nor will it be from the EU.
3) Corbyn would be in charge of negotiations.
Still think that's a good idea....?
Always difficult to provide firm evidence of anything which, by definition, is still in the future. But I think we can be sure of several things.animist wrote:ok Nick, on your point 1, I don't remember much discussion between us on this aspect of Brexit, so where is your evidence that all these new overseas trade deals are just round the corner?Nick wrote:Only 3 things wrong with that:

Ahem! Being in "a " customs union is not "a silly Tory idea" (though there are some of those!) it is Labour's only idea! Which as you agree, has already been ruled out by the EU. What then is their alternative? They don't have one!Point 2 - the EU, as you correctly said the other day, have already ruled the silly Tory ideas our of court, but how could you possible know that some version of the present arrangements could not be devised if there were the will on both sides? Not personally, but he would be PM. And given his track record, I don't think he's exactly the right candidate for dealing with the EU, is he? Even if Starmer is heavily involved, he's not the Prime Minister, is he? He won't make it to the group photograph, will he? Point 3 could be the most important point of all!Point 3 barely deserves comment, but I doubt that JC would be personally in control - much more likely to be Keir Starmer

Strong and stable... providing the certainly businesses need...Britain’s business minister said the government understands the importance of avoiding friction in the automotive supply chain after Brexit, as ministers try to overcome differences as to what customs relationships Britain should have with the EU.

“I know… just how crucial it is that in the agreement that we reach with the European Union, that it respects the ability to continue those flourishing supply chain relationships by avoiding introducing new frictions,” Greg Clark said on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Theresa May is trying to overcome deep divisions in her cabinet over the nature of Britain’s divorce with the EU and find agreement on a customs proposal to take to Brexit talks in Brussels.
Asked about when ministers would decide, Clark said: “There’s a sub-committee of the cabinet that is looking at these things. There’s been no requirement to agree by tomorrow night or something like that. The work is going on.”
