Latest post of the previous page:

The MSM likes to demonise Brexiteers but Labour MP John Mann reveals he has suffered death threats and threats of sexual violence against his wife and daughter for representing his 70% Leave constituency and backing Brexit.

A principled, proper Labour MP. Stand firm, John!

There are three fundamental questions for anyone advocating Brexit:

1. What, precisely, are the significant and tangible benefits of leaving the EU?
2. What damage to the UK and its citizens is an acceptable price to pay for those benefits?
3. Which ruling of the ECJ is most persuasive of the need to leave its jurisdiction?

the Brextremists seem to rely on the fact that, apparently, in past negotiations for trade deals with non-member countries, deals have been settled more or less at the last minute. I have probably said this before but will say it again (particularly as I have not seen anyone else say it): ISTM that Brexit is quite unlike any previous negotiation handled by the EU since it involves not closer trade links but more distant trade links - and of course it also involves a sensitive political-cum-security issue over the Irish border. Therefore, Brexit simply cannot be likened, in the facile way of Brexiteers, to any normal deal; therefore it is completely illegitimate to entertain the idea that the EU will at the last moment capitulate on an issue which is of vital importance, and not just economic importance, to one of its member states

Here's a deal I could get behind: the Germany Plus deal. How about you, coffee?

This Germany Plus option for Brexit is brilliant.

We get an EVEN BETTER DEAL than Germany!
Control of Borders and Laws!
We stay out of Euro!
Veto on any EU Army!
Votes on laws!
A court which treats us fairly!
Fresh food!
No Tariffs or Customs!
No NI Border

It's called Remain.

I'm sure @UKLabour will support "Germany Plus" as it meets their six tests.

Ensures strong and collaborative future relationship.
Has *exact same benefits*.
Ensures fair management of migration.
Defends rights and protections.
Protects National security
Delivers for all UK.
What I like is the way it guarentees a permanent customs union with the EU and regulatory alignment, has no hard border, and we get a say in future EU deals. Something I'm sure everyone will like.
Amazingly the negotiation of this deal is well advanced. We’ve been negotiating it now for 40 years. With some of our best minds involved. It’s mature, well structured and not in any sense rushed.
Take for example immigration: we get the right to live and work in any of 27 EU Countries. And whilst they can come here and work, we can send them home after three months if they can’t support themselves.
Or take Nuclear and Drug Regulations - the EU members all agree to fund our regulators! Meaning they do all the job but at 1/28th of the cost!
Under no deal our government promises adequate food, with no safety checks.

Under Germany Plus we get abundant food at exactly the same quality we have now.
And wait for the Sovereignty details.

Under Theresa May’s deal our country is turned into a vassal state

Under Germany Plus our parliament is entirely sovereign.
And look at what Germany Plus does for jobs.

Under Theresa May’s deal, banks leave because they have no financial passports.

Under Germany Plus many German banks have large entities in London as it has great committed infrastructure and is popular with other banks
And look at the single market.

Under Theresa May’s deal we only have ‘access to’ the single market requiring a third individual living there to warrant our goods.

Under Germany Plus, no such third party is needed. We can warrant our own goods as ‘members of’ the single market.
Take the courts.

Under Theresa May’s deal we have no recourse to a higher court that can enforce on EU members.

Under Germany Plus many of our top judges are eligible to be selected and we can use this court to enforce on our EU Partners where they are behaving unfairly.
And take Trade Deals.

Under Theresa May’s deal, we have a trade deal with the Faroe Islands.

Under Germany Plus, we get free trade with 27 Eu Countries, Japan, Canada and many many other countries around the world. ON DAY ONE.
And under Germany Plus, if we so choose, we can still trade under WTO rules with other countries like China and America.
And amazingly under Germany Plus, we can use parts from across Europe without being penalised under WTO rules of origin
The truly amazing thing about the #GermanyPlus option is we can actually force the Germans and the rest of the EU to accept this deal. And they can't do anything about it. We truly have the upper hand when it comes to negotiating it.
The Germans will really hate it.

Under Theresa May’s backstop agreement the Germans will have a say in the way our country is run and there is nothing we can do about it.

Under Germany Plus, its Britain that has a say in the way all 27 other EU countries are run!
And Germany Plus is democratically accountable through a series of elections held every four years. We get to elect representatives that go to Brussels and stick it to the bosh.
Now how do we get such a Great deal? Surely lack of Parliamentary time would be an issue - well here’s the amazing thing - Germany Plus uses the least amount of Parliamentary time compared to all other options. We need to revoke one act of Parliament and send a letter. That’s it.
We could get this deal in an afternoon. But there is a time limit on this amazing deal. We need to take it before the 29th of March otherwise it becomes void.

One concern is, I am still not convince that the uk can set it own limit on immigration under this deal.

The rest of the deal seem ok.

News from Planet Reality:
Last night Number 10 rejected Jeremy Corbyn's Brexit position. A letter from the prime minister left it very unlikely that a deal with Labour could be struck, or the Brexit deadlock overcome. If Labour's policy is going nowhere, the party should finally move on and back a People’s Vote - as senior figures including Tom Watson, John McDonnell and Keir Starmer have all committed to in recent days.

May’s letter highlighted several ambiguities in the Labour leader’s proposal. Will Corbyn’s aim to have a say on EU trade policy work in practice? Does he accept that completely frictionless access to the single market will mean continuing the free movement of people? What exactly does he mean by “shared institutions and obligations”?

But May’s letter also has an ulterior motive: to dangle some shiny concessions that might win wavering Labour MPs to backing the government’s deal, even if Corbyn doesn’t.

One is the offer of “further financial support for communities that feel left behind”. Labour MPs in austerity-ravaged constituencies would be short-sighted to buy into this (see more below). The other is an offer of “asking Parliament whether it wishes to follow suit” whenever EU standards on workers’ rights and environmental protections change. This should not be enough for Labour MPs, as it means that - depending on the composition of the Parliament of the day - the UK still risks being left behind.

https://www.open-britain.co.uk/r?u=blD924-a5ASkxKP9IyZ4UKi3RmPzL8iKFzZjpRtiTLc&e=7258668eab9c2d9ccad238fc304d70d7&utm_source=in&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=11_feb_2019&n=6

Ultimately, these exchanges between May and Corbyn are just another phase of the endless Brexit time wasting. The prime minister can’t accept Corbyn’s demands on a customs union with the EU, as a Downing Street spokesperson made clear. And senior Tories would revolt against a compromise with Labour, as Liz Trusssuggested yesterday. Meanwhile Corbyn and his team won’t want the blood of May’s Brexit deal on their hands when the true impact is felt down the line.

But it is important that we’re finally getting a constructive debate about the merits of different Brexit options. It’s just unfortunate this didn’t happen months ago, before Brexit uncertainty started hollowing out the UK economy.

And what the dialogue does show is that both May and Corbyn are proposing a blindfold Brexit. The prime minister even admits a deal “cannot be legally binding” and has a “spectrum of outcomes”. This means no clarity and no closure for years to come.

MPs do not have to accept this. With less than 50 days until Brexit, May now looks unwilling to offer another “meaningful vote” on her deal until the end of the month. But Parliament will get a chance to assert itself in earlier votes this Thursday. That includes Jeremy Corbyn: the prime minister has rejected his core Brexit demand outright, more talks would just mean more time wasting - he shouldn't buy it. Now is the time to end the can kicking and back the only way out of this Brexit mess - a People’s Vote.
Tweet of the Day

OFOC co-founder Lara Spirit reports that Jeremy Corbyn still thinks a People’s Vote is an option.

Government bribes dwarfed by Brexit hit to Labour constituencies

Labour MPs should know the cost for their constituents of the government’s proposed Brexit deal will dwarf any temporary pot of cash they are offered by Number 10 in exchange for their support. A total of 36 Labour MPs are either reported to have been targeted by Downing Street or rebelled in key votes this month to help the government inch forward its Brexit plan. They are in constituencies that face collectively losing £1.1 billion a year within a decade of the deal being agreed, new research by the People’s Vote campaign revealed.

That includes: £970 million in lost economic output; £30.5 million in lost European investment in structural funds; and £88 million in lost EU agricultural subsidy. This is based on the Treasury’s own figures and further research by LSE. And, even if ministers do inject some temporary cash, it will not offset the £895 million cut from local authority funding in these areas by the same government. Any Labour MP thinking of accepting what is, in effect, a government Brexit bribe for their constituency should think again.
Quote of the Day

“The way to end austerity is to think again about staying in the European Union and for Britain to lead the way in seeking deeper, faster and lasting change. It is not to form a toxic alliance with the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg that can only result in making our people poorer.”

Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar, urges colleagues not to support the government’s deal in return for constituency funding.

Police powers handcuffed by Brexit

Brexit could seriously damage police powers to detain foreign suspects and apprehend British fugitives in Europe, deputy assistant commissioner Richard Martin has said. Martin concentrates on the impact of no deal but even if there is a deal security co-operation is at threat (as the prime minister's letter to Jeremy Corbyn makes clear) and the European Arrest Warrant will be automatically weakened as soon as we enter the transition period. In the event of a no deal, British police would lose access to a range of Europe-wide tools such as the SIS-2 database of convictions and wanted suspects, and the European arrest warrant, which speeds up extradition and allows arrests if officers suspect someone is wanted overseas. The UK would fall back on methods originating in the 1950s, under which checks on criminals could take up to 66 days - rather than happen instantaneously, as is the case today. The safety of UK citizens is another crucial reason to reject this blindfold Brexit.

It's clear that the only way forward is a People's Vote. Now is a crucial time to get involved with the campaign. The people of Europe are rebelling. A Europe wide ‘peasants revolt’ is taking shape. The EU has to be overthrown before the nations of Europe are destroyed and pounded into globalist controlled Euro-blob. Let the Euro elections in May be a mass democratic rebellion!

What’s changed? Only Mr Corbyn’s view of the EU. But a Labour insider told me Mr C has to placate the numerous Remainers in his party. Why doesn’t he just tell the voters straight? Or is this just a Marxist-Leninist ploy to fool the Europhiles? UKIP tells it straight. Leave now

Meanwhile, back in reality:
The chancellor found himself grappling with a slew of dire economic figures yesterday, knowing full well that continued Brexit uncertainty means worse is likely to follow. The economy only grew by 0.2% in the final quarter of last year - and actually contracted by 0.4% in December. Meanwhile business investment was down a whopping 3.7% on the same quarter last year.

That’s bad news for British jobs. Look no further than the recent decision made by Nissan not to build its new X Trail model in Sunderland, and the fears of workers there, for an example of the real-life consequences of a Brexit downturn.

Now the latest figures are only snapshots from the end of 2018. But anyone following the business news since new year will know things have not improved. What’s more, the chancellor himself fears the economy-sapping impact of Brexit will continue, with Brexit talks and the threat of a calamitous “no deal” crash out expected to go to the “eleventh hour”.

And even if Theresa May somehow managed to scrape her deal with the EU through Parliament, the economy would struggle to pick itself up. That’s because May’s deal will give neither clarity nor closure on Brexit.

https://www.open-britain.co.uk/r?u=blD924-a5ASkxKP9IyZ4UKi3RmPzL8iKFzZjpRtiTLc&e=7258668eab9c2d9ccad238fc304d70d7&utm_source=in&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=12_feb_2019&n=8

All the big concrete decisions about the UK’s future relationship with the EU have been postponed until after we’ve left. Endless political fighting will mean those decisions won’t be made for years to come. Businesses need to know basic facts about the future: what our relationship with our biggest trading partner will be; what our immigration system will look like and who they will be able to hire. Instead they’ll get a blindfold Brexit, and it will be miserable.

Certainly, the chancellor’s claims that securing an agreement with the EU will mean a “deal dividend” now look ridiculous. Getting a withdrawal deal would not mean an economic boost so much as “avoiding something really very bad”, a highly critical report by the Commons Treasury committee says. Indeed, economic analysis by both the government and independent experts shows that even the softest Brexit will leave the UK economy worse off in years to come than it would be if we stayed in the EU.

But there’s a positive flipside to all this bad news: we can boost our economy by staying in the EU. Not only that, but it would remove the distraction of Brexit and allow politicians to focus on fixing the problems that led to Brexit in the first place - an ailing NHS, too few homes, overstretched schools, communities left behind.

The way to do that is with a People’s Vote. It’s still within our power to say no to this endless blindfold Brexit which will leave us all poorer.
Tweet of the Day

Resolution Foundation director Torsten Bell presents the shocking fact that families have already seen their income hit since the referendum according to their latest report. This is why we need a People’s Vote.

Labour proposal should get vote

Keir Starmer, shadow Brexit secretary, has called for Labour’s proposal of a customs union with the EU to be put to a vote in the House of Commons. His suggestion, made in an interview with the Belfast Telegraph, should be welcomed by all sides as a way to move the Brexit debate forward. Labour’s Brexit offer needs to receive the same scrutiny that led MPs to reject the government’s deal by 230 votes. And it is unlikely to pass, judging by the Conservative reaction to Theresa May’s - Liam Fox called it a “dangerous delusion”, reports The Times.

The majority of MPs will see the defects in Labour’s proposal once it has its day(s) in Parliament. It turns us into a much bigger rule-taker than even May’s deal, with highly optimistic aims of having a say on the EU’s trade and other policies. It wouldn’t do anything to change the controversial “backstop” arrangement. And it would still leave us poorer than we would have been if we’d stayed in the EU. By ruling it out, Labour can finally move on to a proper solution to this Brexit mess - handing the whole thing back to the public with a People’s Vote.

Promises, promises

The prime minister will today ask MPs for extra time. She’ll say they’ll get another chance to vote on Brexit towards the end of the month in order to persuade them not to take control of the process on Valentine’s Day. But if there’s another “meaningful vote” on her deal by the end of the month and she loses it, what happens next? Will she be able to run down the clock or will MPs then be able to force her to ask the EU to delay Brexit? Only when her exact words have been examined will parliamentarians be able to decide what, if any, amendments are needed on Thursday. Hugo Dixon examines the complex procedure in this piece for InFacts.

It's clear that the only way forward is a People's Vote. Now is a crucial time to get involved with the campaign. Fox does one deal

A round of applause, please, for Liam Fox. The trade minister has finally signed off the first of his “rollover” trade deals with Switzerland. That’s right, with less than 50 days to go until Brexit, Fox has now managed to copy one of the forty or so trade deals we already had as a member of the EU.

Remember how Fox suggested he’d have all these ready to go by Brexit day on March 29? Well, his department admitted for the first time yesterday that this would not in fact be the case. Meanwhile the big deal - our relationship with the EU bloc - is sketched out only as a vague wishlist in the “Political Declaration” part of the government’s deal. And cutting new deals with other big global economies is only likely to happen after that.
Quote of the Day

"Another day has gone by and another promise on Brexit is casually being broken. This is just the start and things will only get worse. The idea of Liam Fox going into trade negotiations with Donald Trump is like someone taking a teaspoon to a knife fight."

Labour MP Anna McMorrin reacts to news that EU trade deals will not be rolled over before Brexit, and looks to the future.
What's your reason?

Women for a People’s Vote supporter Patricia wants a People’s Vote because “Now we know the full facts of Brexit.”

How would you be spending the estimated average of £2,000 Brexit has cost us all so far, coffee? The economic cost of the Brexit decision that Leaver voters do not get to see
Imagine if someone came to every Leavers door demanding nearly £2,000 for their household’s current contribution to Brexit. The evidence suggests that Brexit would quite quickly become about the economics. One of the reasons Brexit can happen is that its economic costs are not immediately visible. It is experienced but not isolated as a Brexit effect. It can be estimated to a reasonable degree of accuracy by experts, but the Brexit press keeps going on about the pre-referendum Treasury forecast and the broadcast media prefers a quiet life to routinely quoting these expert assessments. Brexit is not about the economy only because Leave voters are being kept in the dark about the impact Brexit is already having.
