The political compass test

#1 Post by Zoe » February 18th, 2008, 11:45 am

I know several people here will have done this test before - it is all over the web, after all.

http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

My result was

Economic Left/Right: -5.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.87

It's quite a fun survey, but not, I think, particularly accurate. To all the questions I wanted to say "It all depends. Let's examine that question further..." Apparently, I am economically to the left of Gordon Brown. Hmmm. Thankfully, I am substantially more libertarian than he is

Not sure about this test: what is the real difference between "agree" and "strongly agree"? I don't think I agree with anything weakly!

My results:
Economic Left/Right: -6.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.95

I'm more of a Libertarian than Ghandi.

Still not sure what that means.

Economic Left/Right: -4.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.56

I did this test less than a year ago and my results then were:

Economic Left/Right: -5.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.28

I don't actually think my views have changed at all since then so I think my answers partly depend on my mood on a given day. On Ninny's point about the difference between agree and strongly agree, I reserved 'strongly agree' (or strongly disagree) for the few issues that make me see red very quickly if I'm talking or reading about them. The older I get, the fewer there are of these.

Economic Left/Right: -4.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.05

Well I'm obviously not as hard left as some here but I am the most libertarian.

I was somewhere between Mandela and the Dalai Lama. Surprisingly, my mum (Telegraph reading, hang 'em and flog 'em brigade was distinctly left and libertarian too (although closer to the centre point). How do they calculate this thing?

LeftLibertarian
Same libertarian leaning as Ghandi but only half as left leaning.

I have become less left-wing over the years but it doesn't mean I'm likely to go anywhere other than where I am now; thoroughly disenchanted with New Labour and the Liberals and not that confident of the tories either.

Economic Left/Right: -1.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.33

I'm surprised by the lack of economic leftness I scored.

Hello Emma W, fancy meeting you here!

But hey! I've just gone back and taken a deeper look at this site and came across this analysis...
http://www.politicalcompass.org/extremeright

BNP= Left Leaning
NLP= Right Leaning
'Once you accept that left and right are merely measures of economic position, the "extreme right" refers to extremely liberal economics that may be practised by social authoritarians or social libertarians.'

Oh yeah I hadn't really seen that before, what a dunderhead I am; or, have I just woken up on another parallel earth?
Help someone; am I going nuts?

Economic Left/Right: -5.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.97

This puts me about where the Dalai Lama is. Not sure if that's good or bad...

Economic Left/Right: -6.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.28

Somewhere between Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama. Further left than I expected.

I would imagine that those identifying as humanist would be more liberal in that they would be more tolerant,

Economic Left/Right: -4.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.08

Apparently...

Economic: -3.62
Social Libertarian: -4.10

So I guess pretty much in the same area as everyone else although as Electric Angel says, give the sample selection, you would expect that we would mostly tend towards the Libertarian end.

(Actually, I've just noticed that I am the least liberal of the lot of us - Crumbs!)

I was less libertarian than any of you only -2 point something (sorry I did not keep a record of it when I did it recently on facebook), but I was about -6 on the left scale. I am happy enough with that and it does explain why the kind of ppl I know tend to find my views authoritarian, cos it's all relative to where they are on the scale, and i am happy as my score was really quite close to Gandhi who I much admire.

I usually score around -7.5, -7.5 on that test. It depends on how I interpret the question.

I found the structure clumsy and the underlying assumptions completely off the wall, but I did the test anyway and it put me way down in the bottom left hand corner..
Pretty accurate, broadly speaking.
